The College of Supervisors is an endeavour from the Reserve Bank of India to provide an enabling environment for continuous learning to the supervisors, regulators and policy makers.
Regulatory and Supervisory functions of the Reserve Bank are intended to ensure stability of individual financial institutions as well as the financial system. A stable and resilient financial system requires early identification of vulnerabilities and risk build-up within each entity as well as at the system level, and initiation of appropriate corrective actions. Skill and experience of supervisors is an important factor in achieving this goal.
It is imperative that supervisors possess both technical and soft skills to discharge their responsibilities effectively. They are also expected to be continuous learners to keep themselves abreast of the latest developments. The financial system is dynamic and financial entities continuously push the envelope in search of growth, profitability and innovation. An institutional mechanism within the supervisory authority is, therefore, very important.
The College of Supervisors is envisaged to be a ‘Centre of Excellence’ under the ambit of the Reserve Bank. In times to come, the College would need to have multi-dimensional training programmes to enhance technical, analytical, behavioural and cognitive abilities of supervisors and regulators. The faculty may harness the expertise of academicians, researchers and domain experts, as may be required.
I wish the College of Supervisors great success in its endeavour and attain excellence.
