Hugo Fruehauf (born 1939) is an American aerospace engineer who was one of the principal engineers involved in the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS).[1] As chief engineer and systems manager at Rockwell International, he directed the design and development of the first GPS satellites between 1973 and 1978.[2] His principal technical contribution was leading the development of a miniaturised rubidium vapour atomic clock capable of operating in the intense radiation environment encountered by GPS satellites.[3]

In 2019, Fruehauf shared the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering with Bradford Parkinson, James Spilker and Richard Schwartz for their contributions to the creation of GPS.[3]

Early life and education

Fruehauf was born in Germany in 1939 and spent his early childhood near Frankfurt during the Second World War.[1] His childhood included periods sheltering from air raids, and he emigrated to the United States at the age of 13.[4] He studied electronic engineering technology at DeVry University in Illinois, graduating in 1960.[2][5]

Early engineering career

From 1960 to 1965, Fruehauf worked as a field operations test engineer for Martin Marietta and Convair.[2][5] His work included testing the TM-76B cruise missile at Cape Canaveral and participating in Atlas–Agena launches and Titan I missile testing at Vandenberg Air Force Base.[2][5]

Fruehauf joined Rockwell International, then known as North American Rockwell, in 1965 at the Mississippi Test Facility, later renamed the Stennis Space Center.[2] He became electrical systems manager and later chief test conductor for the S-II, the second stage of the Saturn V launch vehicle used during the Apollo program.[1][4][5]

Development of GPS

After his work on the Apollo programme, Fruehauf joined Rockwell's satellitte division in California and became chief engineer and systems manager for the company's GPS satellite programme.[6] Rockwell had been selected to construct the experimental satellites needed to demonstrate the new positioning system proposed by the United States Department of Defense.[7] GPS determines a receiver's position by measuring the travel time of precisely timed signals transmitted from several satellites, making accurate and reliable atomic clocks essential to the system.[3] Existing atomic clocks were too large and heavy for the proposed satellites, and their electronic components were vulnerable to radiation in space.[4] Fruehauf worked with the German clock manufacturer Efratom and engineers at Rockwell to adapt a compact rubidium vapour oscillator for satellite operation.[7][1]

The resulting clock was miniaturised and designed to withstand radiation, temperature changes and the other environmental stresses of space flight.[3] The Efratom and Rockwell rubidium clocks met the required standards for stability and durability, enabling the first four GPS satellites to complete the programme's principal demonstration objectives.[7] The Science Museum Group describes Efratom's Model FRK oscillator as the basis for the timekeeping equipment used in the first generation of GPS satellites.[8]

Fruehauf also served as Rockwell's chief engineer during the company's work on NASA's proposed Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System.[2]

Later career

Fruehauf left Rockwell in 1978 and subsequently joined Ball Efratom, a manufacturer of precision atomic oscillators and frequency standards.[1] He served as president of Ball Efratom and its successor, Datum Efratom, from 1982 until 1995, while also holding the position of chief technology officer.[9][5] During this period, the company continued developing compact rubidium oscillators for GPS satellites, telecommunications and other precision timing applications.[2]

From 1995 to 1997, Fruehauf was group vice president and chief technology officer of the defence group at Alliant Techsystems.[9][5] In December 1997, he was appointed president of the communications division of Odetics, and he later served as chief executive and chief technology officer of Zyfer.[10][9] He became chief technology officer of Frequency Electronics in 2005 following its acquisition of Zyfer.[9]

Fruehauf completed an MBA in global business and management at the Pepperdine Graziadio Business School in 2007.[2] In 2008, he established the Hugo Fruehauf Company, a consultancy specialising in GPS, precision navigation, atomic clocks and satellite timing, and began teaching international business and economics as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University.[1][2]

Honours

Fruehauf, Parkinson, Spilker and Schwartz were announced as the recipients of the 2019 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering in February 2019.[3][11] Fruehauf received the award from the Prince of Wales during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on 3 December 2019.[12]

Pepperdine University's Graziadio Business School named him its Best for the World Alumni Leader in 2021.[13]
