U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Yale College in 1825, he studied law at Litchfield Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1827, and began to practice law in Litchfield, Connecticut. He was Postmaster of Litchfield (1832 to 1846) and a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1851. In addition, he was the Litchfield Town Treasurer, Litchfield Probate Judge, and a Colonel in the Connecticut State Militia. In 1861, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh Congress, serving until 1863. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he again served in the Connecticut State House of Representatives (1866, 1874) and continued to practice law until his death.
