When Deutscher Aero Lloyd and Junkers Luftwerkehr merged in 1926, Deutsche Luft Hansa was created. Airline's symbol and one of the most recognizable trademarks in airline industry the winged crane flying over sun can be traced to Deutsche Luftreederei from 1919 that was later absorbed into Deutscher Aero Lloyd. Airline stopped to operate immediately after the defeat of Germany in WWII. In 1953 Luftag, a new airline was formed. The same year company adopted the present title Deutsche Lufthansa AG. They operated Convairs CV 340's and Lockheed Constellations. Operations started on domestic network in April 1955. In October 1955 airlines first turboprop Vickers Viscount was delivered. First pure jet a Boeing 707 was put into service on April 3rd 1960. In 1961 Lufthansa established Condor Flugdienst as its charter arm. In 1964 Boeing 727 joined the fleet. Lufthansa was launch customer of Boeing 737. First wide-body, a Boeing 747, was delivered in March 1970 and put into service in April 26th. In 1976 Lufthansa founded its cargo subsidiary Lufthansa Cargo. In 1979 Lufthansa was launch customer of Airbus A310. In 1997 Lufthansa became founding member of Star Alliance, the worlds largest airline alliance. In March 2005 Lufthansa purchased Swiss International but Swiss remain operated as separate entity. In December 2006 Lufthansa became launch customer of Boeing 747-800. In September 2008 Lufthansa acquired 45% stake in Brussels Airlines. Month later, Lufthansa purchased 30% stake in British carrier BMI with further option to purchase remaining shares. In December 2008 Lufthansa announced that it will purchase 42% interest in Austrian Airlines from Austrian government. Both Swiss and Austrian Airlines became part of Lufthansa Group. In May 2020, the German government announced that they will acquire 20% stake in the company and provide cca 10 billion euro financial aid to help the company survive the shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lufthansa Express Division - - - Under a strategy, eight key domestic German routes were served by a special spin-off division, Lufthansa Express, (1990s) that promises passengers a better on-time record, faster check-in and a chance at bargain prices. LH Express was a brand name for domestic services for some years. LH Express set up routes, in competition to Deutsche BA. Unfortunately, it did not succeed enough in competition and was eventually shut down. They did fly some Boeings 737s, and Airbus 300 and 310.
