Tanner Pearson (born August 10, 1992) is a Canadian professional ice hockey winger. He currently plays for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, Vegas Golden Knights, and Winnipeg Jets.
Pearson is a one-time Stanley Cup champion, winning with the Kings in 2014.
Career
[change | change source]Before playing in the NHL, Pearson played two seasons with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He had a successful time with the Colts. He was named to the All-Star second team.[1]
He was drafted 30th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2012 NHL entry draft.[2] On August 3, 2012, Pearson signed a three-year, $2.2 million entry-level contract to join the Kings.[3] He was sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Manchester Monarchs.
On May 18, 2013, the Kings called him up and Pearson made his NHL debut in a 2–1 overtime loss against the San Jose Sharks in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals.[4] On November 14, Pearson scored his first NHL goal against Kevin Poulin during the third period in a 3–2 win against the New York Islanders in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals.[5] He helped the Kings when they went on a run in the playoffs. They defeated the San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, and Chicago Blackhawks. They went on to defeat the New York Rangers four games to one in the Final to win the Stanley Cup.[6] On April 2, 2015, Pearson signed a two-year, $2.8 million contract to stay with the Kings.[7] On May 9, 2017, Pearson signed a four-year, $15 million contract to stay with the Kings.[8]
On November 14, 2018, the Kings traded Pearson to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Carl Hagelin.[9] Pearson scored 9 goals and recorded 5 assists for 14 points in 44 regular season games for the Penguins.
On February 25, 2019, the Penguins traded Pearson to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Erik Gudbranson.[10] On April 8, 2021, Pearson signed a three-year, $9.75 million contract to stay with the Canucks.[11]
On September 19, 2023, the Canucks traded Pearson along with a 2025 third-round draft pick to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Casey DeSmith.[12] Pearson scored 5 goals and recorded 8 assists for 13 points in 54 regular season games for the Canadiens.
On October 4, 2024, Pearson signed a one-year, $775,000 contract to join the Vegas Golden Knights.[13] Pearson scored 12 goals and recorded 15 assists for 27 points in 78 regular season games for the Knights.
On July 1, 2025, Pearson signed a one-year, $1 million contract to join the Winnipeg Jets.[14] Pearson scored 7 goals and recorded 6 assists for 13 points in 52 regular season games for the Jets.
On March 6, 2026, the Jets traded Pearson to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick.[15]
