No one expected the success of Dream Weaver when it was released, but it sailed to the top of the charts, and with good reason. Backed with only drums and a wide assortment of keyboards, Gary Wright crafted instantly recognizable tunes such as the title cut and "Love Is Alive," which caught on and remain staples of classic rock stations around the U.S. All very revolutionary and new at the time, Dream Weaver hasn't lost any of its magic over time.

No respectable "Yacht Rock" mix or K-Tel Collection would be the same without a few cuts from the former Spooky Tooth front man and frequent George Harrison collaborator. Wright was in good company on this release, too, with Jim Keltner and Andy Newmark sharing drum duty and David Foster helping on keys; perhaps that's why is still sounds ahead of its time today. Matty Recommends: “Love is Alive" - Deep Cut: "Made to Love You."

For me, the title track recalls the sound of wheels on a dark wooden rink, the song’s spell-casting intro beckoning me and other kids into a magical world of roller-skating reverie. “Dream Weaver” was state-of-the-art pop/rock fantasy for the bluelight poster generation. I gotta think Stevie Nicks was listening closely, her lyrics journal open.

Today, only about half of Gary Wright’s The Dream Weaver holds up, but that figure includes a pair of deathless singles, the other being the dazzling “Love Is Alive” (for a while a go-to hip hop sample). The credits note that Dream Weaver is an “album of keyboard music.” Technically that’s not entirely correct, because there are drums. Yet the same is true for vintage Gary Numan, and the parallel is instructive. Before Bowie introduced the alienated robotic aesthetic, this is what the future of rock sounded like.

El Gary Wright va gaudir, durant els 70s, d'un considerable èxit i radiodifusió gràcies a la seva habilitat per engiponar sense massa ajut de ningú més uns àlbums de pop-rock sintètics molt encomanadissos i llaminers. Els seus discs eren d'aquells que fins i tot es veien amb la necessitat d'explicitar en els crèdits allò de "només s'han emprat teclats electrònics per compondre tota la música d'aquest disc" (aquí amb l'ajut d'una bateria de debò a mans del Jim Keltner).

I allà on molts fracassaven en l'intent de donar vida a una música que pretenia ser orgànica des de la síntesi, el Gary Wright se'n va sortir amb escreix. Aquest Dream weaver probablement pugui ser considerat com el seu primer àlbum on el que seria el corpus de la seva obra posterior no només s'endevina sinó que es desplega.

Mancat, potser, de la inspiració melòdica compositiva que demostraria en el posterior Light of smiles, tot i així el Wright s'empesca unes bases sintètiques molt enginyoses i riques en varietat que fan de baix, de guitarra i del que faci falta per acompanyar la seva veu, una veu que és dúctil i que li permet atacar un rang força ampli de notes, sobretot quan es llança a fer falsettos estratosfèrics.

Amb l'ajut del Keltner, però sobretot també del David Foster (posterior productor superexitós de grans noms de l'AOR dels 80 i 90) als teclats, Wright entrega un disc de pop-rock al qual potser li manca una mica d'inspiració i de varietat, però que demostra el gran músic que era i preparava el camí per una bona tongada d'àlbums que, seguint la mateixa línia, reportarien un grapat de cançons molt notables.

Here we have Gary Wright, he of the electronic piano, meandering bass and, possibly a drum machine. That is not to say that all of this proffering is without some substance. It does have that but, let's just say, in small measure. Ultimately a pleasant listening experience but most of these tunes are a) eerily similarly toned or b) go nowhere. This why after many, many years I've unearthed this from my considerable archive to listen while I review (which I try to do with most of my reviews).

If you really want to include anything from this then download "Dream Weaver" and that should quench your thirst before you move towards more interesting selections.

"Love is Alive" is the best song, and I'm surprised the title track charted as well as it did considering the chorus is disappointing and there isn't much substance to it. No other songs on the album stick out as being very good or special, but they aren't bad either. If you like electronic and slightly disco infused rock, this is an album for you.

Usable as a scapegoat for all the dreck that followed in his wake. Yes, there are influential albums that one may wish had never existed.
