A modern funkcionálanalízis egyik megalapítójaként tartják számon.

1950-ben a Magyar Népköztársasági Érdemrenddel is kitüntették. 1948-ban a Párizsi Tudományos Akadémia levelező tagjává, 1954-ben pedig a Bajor Tudományos Akadémia külső tagjává választották.

Öccse, Riesz Marcell szintén világhírű matematikus volt. A két testvér neve együtt is ismert a matematikában, például az F. és M. Riesz-tétel révén. Riesz Frigyes életműve máig jelentős hatással van a modern matematikára és a matematikai fizikára.

Frigyes Riesz — often known in English as Frederic Riesz — was a Hungarian mathematician and university professor. He was born on January 22, 1880, in Győr, Hungary, and died on February 28, 1956, in Budapest. He is regarded as one of the founders of modern Functional analysis.

Riesz studied in Zurich, Budapest, and Göttingen. He later taught at the Franz Joseph University in Kolozsvár. After the university was moved to Szeged, he became one of the central figures of the Szeged school of mathematics, which played an important role in Hungarian and international mathematical research.

His work was fundamental in functional analysis, operator theory, ergodic theory, topology, and the theory of orthogonal series. Several important mathematical concepts and results bear his name, including the Riesz–Fischer theorem, the Riesz representation theorem, Riesz's lemma, and the concept of a Riesz space.

Together with Alfréd Haar, he founded the mathematical journal Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum, which helped establish the international reputation of mathematical research in Szeged. He was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Riesz received several major honours for his scientific achievements. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences awarded him the Marczibányi Prize in 1927 and its Grand Prize in 1946. He received the Gold Grade Kossuth Prize in 1949 and the Kossuth Grand Prize in 1953. In 1950, he was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Hungarian People's Republic. He was elected a corresponding member of the Paris Academy of Sciences in 1948 and an external member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 1954.

His younger brother, Marcel Riesz, was also a world-renowned mathematician. The names of the two brothers are also known together in mathematics, for example through the F. and M. Riesz theorem. Frigyes Riesz's work continues to influence modern mathematics and mathematical physics.
