Major League Baseball Player. Born in Graham, North Carolina, he was a left handed pitcher best remembered for giving up Babe Ruth's 60th home run in 1927. On July 11, 1918, he made his debut with the Philadelphia Athletics and for nineteen seasons he played with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1918, Washington Senators 1919 to 1925, 1927 to 1928, St. Louis Browns 1926 to 1927, New York Yankees 1928 to 1930, Brooklyn Dodgers 1934 and 1935, and Philadelphia Phillies in 1936. He led the American League in wins with 18 in 1921, in games started with 33 in 1925, also was a member of the World Series Champions Washington Senators in 1924 and New York Yankees in 1928. With the New York Yankees in 1929, he went 12-0 which is still the Major League record for most pitching wins without a loss in one season. He ended his career with 186 wins, 191 losses, 24 shutouts, 22 saves, 720 strikeouts and a 3.73 earned run average. He died in Burlington, North Carolina, at age 72 and Tom Zachary Field in Graham, North Carolina, is named in his honor.
