San Francisco has always been a city that takes the future seriously. We think this conversation belongs there. On July 8, we'll bring Code for the People to KQED Headquarters for a preview screening in partnership with KQED. The film asks hard questions about who controls the internet, what open source makes possible, and what is at stake as AI reshapes our world. After the screening, Automattic CEO and WordPress Co-founder Matt Mullenweg, Automattic VP of Product Pedraum Pardehpoosh, KQED Editor-in-Chief Ethan Toven-Lindsey, and Producer Michael Dinh will dig into those questions live. Open source is a community effort, and each community has a story to tell. For this year's WordCamp Europe in Kraków, Poland, the Automattic Design team wanted the swag created to reflect the city and its people. They commissioned Polish artists and makers to create pieces inspired by local culture, history, and folklore. From legendary dragons to Renaissance-era artwork, the pieces were more than a collection of keepsakes. They celebrated the creativity, craftsmanship, and community that make open source events like WordCamp so unique and special. A big thank you to local artists Ola Niepsuj, Marta Przeciszewska, Patryk Hardziej, and Michalina Rolnik for collaborating with us and bringing these ideas to life! Meet the artists, explore their work, and learn more about the inspiration behind each piece on the Automattic Newsroom blog: https://lnkd.in/dXaeUeKq

On July 1, Code for the People had its East Coast premiere at the Crosby Street Hotel in New York City. The film asks hard questions: who controls the internet, what open source makes possible, and what AI changes about all of it. The panel that followed the screening proved these aren't niche concerns. They’re questions that matter to everyone who builds, creates, or publishes online. We're grateful to everyone who joined us. And we're glad this conversation is just the beginning. The film drops July 9, and it’s free for anyone to watch. If you missed last night, your chance is coming. → codeforthepeople.com

It’s time to turn the tassels! 🎓 Earlier this week, the first cohort of AI Leaders graduates under the University of Illinois Chicago Tech Solutions Open Source Fund. Around 40 students from Illinois and Louisiana built real WordPress projects, applied generative AI to real work, and earned a credential employers can verify. They were paid to complete the program because this is workforce development, not unpaid training. Several have already lined up jobs. AI Leaders is part of Automattic's $500M, five-year commitment to open source education. Open source is how the web got built. We think it's how the next generation of AI-literate workers should get built too–in the open, accessible to anyone. The web is what we make it, and you're the people making it next. Congratulations to the first cohort! 👉Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eKSE_GTN

We’re still not over WordCamp Europe 2026. Day three was packed with building, learning, and connecting. The final session brought together WordPress Executive Director Mary Hubbard, our Head of Architecture Matías Ventura, and Product Manager Rich Tabor for a fireside chat on where WordPress is heading next. Fresh off the WordPress 7.0 release, the conversation explored what it means to build with AI without losing the human element. Hubbard put it plainly: “Open source is why WordPress has thrived, and those same values should be shaping AI, and emphasized the community needs to be far louder about that.” A huge thank you to the 2,000-plus attendees from 81 countries who made WCEU 2026 one for the books. See you in Málaga in 2027!
