🔎 Policy update: Accelerating carbon management innovation Carbon management technologies, including carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and greenhouse gas removals (GGRs), will be critical to achieving the UK's net zero ambitions. The Government's Energy Innovation Needs Assessment identifies these technologies as integral to fully decarbonising the UK, with innovation needed to reduce costs and enable deployment at scale. To support this, the UK Government has launched the Carbon Management Innovation Challenge, bringing together industry, academia and government to accelerate progress in this area. The challenge sets three non-binding ambitions to be achieved by 2040: ✅ Halve the cost of point-source carbon capture across key UK applications compared to 2025 benchmark costs ✅ Halve the cost of direct air capture compared to 2025 benchmark costs ✅ Build a healthy UK ecosystem of 10 or more commercial-scale greenhouse gas removal projects, across a diverse portfolio of technologies Why is this important for chemical engineers? Chemical and process engineers are the ones developing, implementing, and scaling these carbon capture technologies. Members of the profession also play important roles in many of the hard to abatement industries where this technology will be most relevant. The UK's Industrial Strategy also identifies CCUS and GGRs as key areas of opportunity and research expertise. 🎉 20 years of IChemE in Malaysia! When our Kuala Lumpur office was established 20 years ago, Malaysia was on the cusp of major industrial change. Two decades on, the country is a global leader in petrochemicals, LNG and rubber, and the world's second-largest exporter of palm oil. IChemE has supported Malaysia's chemical engineering community through membership, industry events, knowledge exchange, professional development, and networking opportunities. Milestones along the way: 🏅 Royal patronage since 2016, from HRH Raja Permaisuri Perak Darul Ridzuan Tuanku Zara Salim. 🌴 The Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG) — members contributing technical expertise to the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification standards. 🌟 Symposium of Malaysian Chemical Engineers (SOMChE), the Malaysia Awards, and a new conferring ceremony recognising Chartered members and Fellows. 🏆At this year’s Young Engineers Awards for Innovation and Sustainability (YEAIS), Universiti Malaya and Malaysia Refining Company Sdn Bhd won the Engineering Biology and Digitalisation, Artificial Intelligence & Automation awards, respectively. 💼 The National Early Careers Group supports young professionals to build networks, grow their skills and connect with the community. There’s plenty to look forward to in the months ahead, including the Malaysia Awards Ceremony on 9 September 2026, held alongside the SOMChE 2026 Reception. For the first time, the event will welcome a broader audience - including conference delegates, members, industry professionals, academia and partners, creating more opportunities for networking and collaboration. We're incredibly proud of Archie Goodburn, an IChemE member who represented Team Scotland in the Men's 50m Breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this week. Archie's achievement is remarkable in its own right, but it's made even more extraordinary given the journey behind it. Just over two years ago, Archie was diagnosed with a stage 4 brain tumour. Despite this, he has continued to compete at the highest level while also becoming a passionate advocate for brain cancer research and support. Alongside his sporting achievements, Archie recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a first-class degree in Chemical Engineering and was recognised as a UK finalist in the IChemE Young Engineers Award for his work on clean energy and climate action. 📰 IChemE CEO, Yvonne Baker OBE, has today had a letter published in The Times, contributing to the national conversation on the new Prime Minister's reindustrialisation agenda. The letter highlights a stark figure: the UK has lost approximately 157,000 manufacturing jobs over the past decade. This includes engineers responsible for developing and maintaining the technologies that protect jobs, communities and economic prosperity. ⚙️ Yvonne also raises an important point about the pace of change: as AI adoption accelerates, the blend of hands-on industry experience and up-to-date technical knowledge may become harder to find. The call to action is clear - the UK needs a reindustrialisation strategy announced as soon as possible, backed by meaningful action and support. Over the last 10 years, the UK has lost around 157,000 manufacturing jobs, which is equivalent to six percent of the workforce. That number includes engineers who develop and maintain the valuable technologies that protect jobs and communities, driving economic prosperity. Technology is moving at pace, not least with the rapid adoption of AI. While core skills remain, the combination of hands-on experience alongside knowledge of cutting-edge technologies may become rarer the longer reindustrialisation takes. We need a clear strategy for reindustrialisation to be announced as soon as possible, backed up by action and support.
