Richard Robinson, Hourglass CEO, responds to the Prime Minister’s commitment to social care reform...⏳💬 “Hourglass is encouraged by the Prime Minister’s commitment to social care reform and his focus on building cross-party consensus around one of the biggest issues affecting our ability to age safely and with dignity. For too long, social care has been the subject of promises that have been delayed, postponed or abandoned by successive governments, with lasting consequences for older people, their families and those who care for them. This cycle of commitment followed by inaction cannot continue. Accelerating the Casey Review and launching the Big Conversation on Care represent a welcome change of direction. We encourage older people, their families, carers and those working throughout the social care system to take part and ensure that their experiences shape what comes next. For many older people, social care is not simply about support with everyday tasks. It is about safety, dignity, independence and protection from harm. Any reforms must recognise the realities faced by older people and ensure that the system is equipped to prevent abuse, neglect and exploitation, and to respond effectively when concerns arise. Hourglass will contribute constructively to this process whilst holding the Government to account for turning its commitments into meaningful action. Ciara Corvan, Carer who took 'demeaning' videos of dementia patients, has been sentenced. Here is Hourglass CEO Richard Robinsons response...⏳💬 “The abuse and humiliation of people living with dementia at Craigavon Area Hospital was an appalling violation of their dignity, privacy and trust. Older people do not lose their fundamental rights because they are living with dementia or depend upon others for their care. Degrading behaviour must never be dismissed as humour or allowed to become normalised. Families should feel confident asking questions about their loved one’s care, speaking to them privately where possible and raising concerns about unexplained injuries or changes in their mood, behaviour, appearance or personal care. However, responsibility for preventing abuse must sit squarely with care providers and those responsible for overseeing them. Robust recruitment, appropriate staffing, regular safeguarding training and clear rules governing mobile phones, photography and social media are essential. Providers must also create a culture in which staff challenge and report abusive behaviour immediately, without fear of being ignored or penalised. Hourglass NI provides free and confidential information and support to older people experiencing abuse or neglect, and to anyone concerned about them. Our 24/7 helpline is available on 0808 808 8141. If you are concerned about an older person, record what you have seen or been told and report it promptly. Concerns can be raised with the service provider, the relevant Health and Social Care Trust or the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority.
