Today, that vision takes another step forward with the opening of the HPSC ESPORTS LAB by the Japan Sport Council. From tree planting to protecting freshwater ecosystems, the 2026 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam is putting biodiversity at the heart of event delivery. 🌱💧   That commitment, which began at the 2025 World Rowing Under 19 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania, is now being expanded for the 2026 Worlds. These efforts are now being recognised with World Rowing's pioneering biodiversity initiative, In Balance With Nature, shortlisted for the 2026 Sport Positive Awards for its innovative approach to making rowing events more nature-positive and environmentally responsible.   Developed with bloomUp, the project is creating a practical blueprint to protect and restore the rivers, lakes, and coastal ecosystems on which rowing depends.   It's the second consecutive year World Rowing has been shortlisted for the Sport Positive Awards, recognising the federation's continued commitment to sustainability and nature-positive sport. We will find out the winners on 6 October!

After her week at the 2026 International Paralympic Committee Annual Classification Meetings in Bonn, Germany, we caught up with our own Jodie Cameron, Events Manager and Para Rowing Coordinator at World Rowing, who represented Para Rowing on the global stage. Jodie's path to these meetings has run through rowing itself. A rower and President of the Boat Club at the University of St Andrews before continuing her rowing career at the University of Cambridge (Class of 2022), she joined World Rowing in 2022 — first as an Events Intern, then Events Coordinator. She was later seconded into Para Rowing for the Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024, experience that now underpins her current role coordinating Para Rowing across our federation. Reflecting on the week in Bonn, Jodie came away with three key takeaways: 🤝 Classification is a shared responsibility across the entire Para sport community. ⏩ While Classification has evolved significantly over the past three decades, there is still important work ahead. 🫶 Collaboration across International Federations, National Paralympic Committees and the wider Paralympic Movement is one of the greatest strengths in continuing to improve the system. Jodie's reflections also tie into a wider push for rigor in Para Rowing: World Rowing and the University of Edinburgh are currently leading an IPC-funded Classification Research Grant to sharpen the PR1, PR2 and PR3 sport classes using kinematic analysis and IMU sensors. Together, this work reflects the level of scientific rigour behind ensuring the fairest possible racing in Para Rowing — at the Paralympic Games and beyond. Fair racing starts with fair classification 🚣 Classification is the backbone of fair Para sport competition. Now it's getting a scientific upgrade. World Rowing + The University of Edinburgh have secured International Paralympic Committee funding to research what physical impairment really means for rowing performance, using AI video analysis and wearable sensors to sharpen the Para Rowing classification system. A World Cup Homecoming and a First World Rowing has selected the host venues for the 2027 and 2028 World Rowing Cup III: Racice, Czechia, and Duisburg, Germany. It's a first for Racice, which has twice hosted the World Rowing Championships but never a World Rowing Cup. For Duisburg, it's a return to the series after more than three decades away. Two storied venues, two new chapters in their World Rowing Cup story.

By combining physical performance with connected technology to create truly global competition, Indoor Rowing is redefining what's possible in sport. As one of the International Federations at the forefront of virtual sport, World Rowing is proud to be leading that evolution. Today, we showcased Indoor Rowing at the Olympic Museum during the annual Hosts & Federations Summit organised by Major Events International Ltd. Representatives from cities and countries around the world, alongside colleagues from fellow International Federations, experienced the excitement and accessibility of an Indoor Rowing race firsthand.
