Volition plans 'Agents of Mayhem' for '17 release

Champaign-based game developer Volition plans on bringing its "Agents of Mayhem" to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017, the company's publisher, Deep Silver, announced.

The game will be an open-world action-adventure, played from a third-person viewpoint and set within a "comic hero universe" — the same universe as the studio's previous "Saints Row" series. So while it features an original storyline, many aspects of the game — from design elements to the use of certain symbols — will be familiar to players of Volition's previous titles.

Players will control the Agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M. — the Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds — "a motley outfit of unique and diverse Super Agents recruited from around the world to thwart the destructive schemes of the evil supervillain organization L.E.G.I.O.N. (the League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations)."

The action will center around a fictional version of Seoul, South Korea, where the player's team of elite superhero agents will try to stop L.E.G.I.O.N. from setting off a "world-altering device" that will grant it "unrivaled power."

Three agents have been revealed: Fortune, a gun-slinging female sky-pirate captain who controls a combat drone Glory; a muscular, harpoon-throwing sailor named Hardtack; and bounty-hunting reality TV star Hollywood.

"Agents of Mayhem" will be rated M for mature.
