Not to toot our own horn, but were a large player in pioneering the modern foldable category by turning a futuristic concept people thought impossible into a rugged everyday reality. Through relentless engineering breakthroughs—like inventing ultra-thin folding glass, perfecting water-resistant hinges, and embedding tailored multitasking software—we didn't just build a new phone; we designed an entirely new era of mobile technology.
Let’s take a stroll down memory lane to see how far we’ve come and where we are today.
The device that started it all. The first-gen Galaxy Z Fold was a triumphant proof of concept. The global release introduced the world to the "phone-to-tablet" form factor, shocking the industry and laying the foundation for a brand-new product category.
Galaxy Z Fold2 saw us introduce a much larger, fully functional cover screen. We replaced the plastic screen with ultra-thin glass (UTG) and debuted the Hideaway Hinge. This allowed the phone to stay open at various angles (Flex Mode) turning Galaxy Z Fold2 into a mini laptop style workstation.
In 2021, we unveiled Galaxy Z Fold3 and increased the durability by introducing an IPX8 water-resistance rating and an Armor Aluminum frame. We also added S Pen support to the massive inner display and introduced a futuristic under-display selfie camera.
Galaxy Z Fold4 improved on the previous iteration with an upgraded 50MP wide lens camera and 30x Space Zoom. The body became slightly wider and lighter, making the outer screen easier to type on. Software took center stage with a dedicated desktop-like taskbar, making multitasking between apps smoother than ever.
In 2023, we introduced Galaxy Z Fold5 to the world. Coming in thinner and lighter than its predecessor, the largest physical upgrade here was FlexHinge, which finally allowed the phone to fold completely flat without a visible gap. FlexHinge provided extraordinary camera capabilities such as FlexCam, which enables people to capture content from creative angles. Combine that with strong performance and an optimized battery powered by the latest processor, and we transformed what was possible with a smartphone - open or closed.
Galaxy Z Fold6 ushered a premium aesthetic with more symmetrical bezels and a wider, thinner and lighter build. The true upgrade, however, was on the inside: a massive push into Galaxy AI,1 transforming the dual-screen setup into a real-time interpreter, photo editor, and productivity hub.
