Rule 1: Keep it civil!

Personal attacks, abusive language, trolling or bigotry in any form is not allowed. No hate material, be it submissions or comments, are accepted. Follow reddiquette and remember the human.

Rule 2: Discussions are limited to events over 20 years ago

Discussions about recent events will be removed. We focus on historical events themselves, not on using history to make points about the modern world. This rule also applies to modern politics and soapboxing. Political content is only acceptable if discussed in a historical context, not to advocate an agenda.

Rule 3: Text posts require sources and context

Text posts must include at least two sources (not including Wikipedia) and demonstrate engagement with those sources. Show what you've already learned and what specifically you're trying to understand. Simple questions can be asked in the Weekly History Questions thread. Questions about sources can be asked in the Bookclub and Sources Wednesday thread.

Rule 4: No self-promotion

We don't allow people to post their own content. This includes videos, articles, and blog sites you have created yourself, even if you have no financial incentive for sharing. Allowing self-promotion leads to spam and low-quality content.

Rule 5: No historical negationism, denialism, or alternate history.

We don't allow posts or comments about fringe hypotheses, false narratives, misunderstood or misrepresented history, genocide denial, or other revisionism.

Allowing negationism and denialism gives a platform to dangerous misinformation and often disrespects victims of historical atrocities. Notable examples of negationism include Holocaust denial, Armenian Genocide denial, Japanese war crime denial, the denial of Soviet crimes, and modern sensationalist myths.

Rule 6: No AI generated content

This includes posts, comments, and any other content either generated with AI, or featuring AI elements such as AI imagery or voiceovers. AI can't provide original analysis and often produces inaccurate content with fabricated sources and citations. It also reproduces biases and errors present in its training data.

Rule 7: Titles should be accurate and not sensationalised

Titles should reflect the content and not be sensationalist or misleading. Accurate titles help people find relevant content and prevent clickbait from cluttering the subreddit.

Rule 8: No Atrocity Olympics

Atrocities aren't an Olympic event, to be compared and scored according to how 'bad' they were. Doing so both denies the humanity of what happened and cheapens the severity of the crimes. Ranking atrocities by death toll or suffering trivialises tragedy. Each historical atrocity deserves to be understood in its own context.

Rule 9: No soapboxing

We discuss history for its own sake, not to argue a point about the modern world.

Soapboxing includes comparing historical figures to current politicians, using history to argue about modern politics or causes, using the past to comment on current events, or complaining about the way things are for the sake of complaining.

Rule 10: Post from the original site

Submissions that are simply copy and pasted articles will be removed. Rehosted content deprives original creators of traffic. It also often violates copyright and Reddit's content policy.
