Sandra was born on April 23, 1943 in Bayonne, Hudson county, New Jersey, the only child of John Zuck and Mary Cymboliak and was Carpatho-Rusyn descent.
- "She made her professional debut as a model at age 4, was appearing in commercials by age 12 and at the age of 14 made her first film for MGM Studios, “Until They Sail.” In 1958 she received a Golden Globe Award for “Most Promising Newcomer.”
- She became known for her wholesome roles in the 1959 films “Imitation of Life,” “Gidget” and “A Summer Place.” She had moderately successful film appearances in the 1960s but never returned to the heights of popularity she enjoyed in the previous decade. She worked for Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, and Columbia Pictures.
- While filming the movie “Come September,” she met the handsome singer and actor Bobby Darin. They were married on December 1, 1960, had a son, and divorced in 1967. After making some TV performances, her last performance was in the film drama “Lost” in 1983. Her 1950s stardom was celebrated in the song “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” featured in the Broadway musical “Grease” and in 2004, her life with Darin was portrayed in the film “Beyond the Sea.”
- For most of her life she struggled with ill health battling alcoholism, depression, throat cancer, anorexia nervosa, and kidney ailments.
Sandra died on February 20, 2005 in Thousand Oaks, California and was interred in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, California.[3]
