Combe Mill
Combe Mill is a Victorian steam- and water-powered sawmill now operating as a working museum and everyone reckons that it is different from most other family destinations.
People come back time and again because there is always something different taking place or another object to be discovered.
A visitor wrote that it is a ‘true black fingernail museum’ and we ensure that there are plenty of hands-on activities to challenge and entertain all age groups.
Run entirely by volunteers, many of whom are retired engineers and craftsmen who love to reminisce, you will never find yourself lacking someone to chat with or to ask questions of.
First World War commemoration
Like many destinations we are exploring the part that Combe Mill played during the First World War and how the war affected the lives of the workers and their families.
The Mill was commandeered by the War Office for the manufacture of pit props and duck boards for use in the front line trenches.
Because the beam engine has failed in 1912, power to drive the woodworking machinery was derived from portable steam engines that we parked in the yard and connected to the line shafting.
Students of Oxford Brooks University have researched the lives of some of the Mill workers and you can view their findings by clicking here.
