{"id":31566,"date":"2018-04-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/github.blog\/\/2018-04-12-driving-changes-from-designs\/"},"modified":"2019-01-04T08:57:48","modified_gmt":"2019-01-04T16:57:48","slug":"driving-changes-from-designs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/github.blog\/engineering\/user-experience\/driving-changes-from-designs\/","title":{"rendered":"Using Figma designs to build the Octicons icon library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently our friends at Figma announced their <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.figma.com\/introducing-figmas-platform-ee681bf861e7\">new Figma platform<\/a>, and we&#8217;ve been really excited about its potential. We&#8217;ve immediately put the platform to use with <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/primer\/octicons\">Octicons<\/a>, our SVG icon library.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"distributing-design-assets-effectively\"><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#distributing-design-assets-effectively\">Distributing design assets effectively<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Previously, we checked our asset files into the GitHub repository. This workflow was restrictive and confusing for contributors who might want to iterate on or update an Octicon. We wanted anyone to be able to make contributions, but they needed all of these things to work in order to contribute.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Specific software:<\/strong> We were keeping icons in software specific to macOS. The contributor needed to have this software installed on the same version pinned in the Octicons repository.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Experience with Git:<\/strong> Contributors needed to clone the repository, edit the design asset, and check it back in. This requires knowledge of Git and how to get out of trouble when the binary file won&#8217;t merge properly.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Prior repository setup:<\/strong> After a contributor made changes they needed to run specialized scripts on their computer to output assets. This required all compatible versions of software installed properly on their laptop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"figma-to-the-rescue\"><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#figma-to-the-rescue\">Figma to the rescue<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>To support your project&#8217;s contributors it&#8217;s important to make the contributing experience as frictionless as possible. Migrating our Octicons to Figma let us cut out painful steps in our previous workflow. Having their API available for automating the work has allowed contributors to contribute using powerful platform-agnostic design tools without any overly complex setup.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"getting-robots-to-do-the-work\"><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#getting-robots-to-do-the-work\">Getting robots to do the work<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Robots are great for doing repeatable tasks, and handing that work off to automated systems frees us up to think about the big picture. We lean on continuous integration to build, export, and distribute the icons.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"continuous-integration-ci\"><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#continuous-integration-ci\">Continuous integration (CI)<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>On every pull request we use CI to export our icons from the file and distribute alpha versions of the libraries.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"799\" src=\"https:\/\/github.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/38590067-ca0bcda2-3ce3-11e8-8a8f-fb279b2b16df.png?resize=1200%2C799\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"CI on pull requests\"><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"before-and-after-images\"><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#before-and-after-images\">Before and after images<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>We also take advantage of <a href=\"https:\/\/probot.github.io\/\">Probot<\/a>, an out-of-the-box robot that makes automating GitHub tasks easy.<\/p>\n<p>Probot has the ability to check our pull requests on Octicons and look for changes in the Figma source URL. When this occurs, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/primer\/figma-diff-probot\">our Probot app<\/a> will query Figma&#8217;s platform and look for changes to any of the icons. When it finds those changes, it will comment on the pull request with <em>before and after images<\/em>. This makes the process easier for both contributors and maintainers.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"635\" src=\"https:\/\/github.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/38590069-cca2eec4-3ce3-11e8-83bd-6bb31e87e2a9.png?resize=1200%2C635\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Before and after images\"><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"excited-about-the-future\"><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#excited-about-the-future\">Excited about the future<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The API&#8217;s potential is the most exciting part, and we can&#8217;t wait to see how it improves our workflow. The Design Systems Team at GitHub are designers with an engineering focus. We want to keep our components in code, then make them available for our designers to prototype.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.figma.com\/introducing-figmas-platform-ee681bf861e7#1208\">upcoming Figma write API<\/a> will allow us to maintain our component library in code and export those as Figma components.
