One intermission. | Nederlander Theatre | 208 W. 41st Street | 212-921-8000<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sure, I like corn: popped at the movies, fermented in a still, or buttered on the cob. I may not revere the yellow nubbins as much as <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1VbZE6YhjKk\" data-lasso-id=\"2028630\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corn Kid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and certainly not as Brett Kavanaugh likes beer and restricting women\u2019s bodily autonomy. Do I want to nibble on the starchy stuff for two hours\u2014along with a tornado of dad jokes and an admittedly zesty country score? One pines for kale. Turns out you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have too much of a good grain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crafted by an unusual team of Broadway pros and country-music neophytes, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/shuckedmusical.com\/\" data-lasso-id=\"2028631\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shucked<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a lot of fun. Probably 90 minutes of fun that, in a smaller venue, would secure the show\u2019s rightful place alongside <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bat Boy, Reefer Madness,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Toxic Avenger<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as a subversive metamusical (years ago dubbed \u201cspooficals\u201d). Instead, this small-town versus big-city fable wants to have its cornbread and eat it, too: going heavy on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hee-Haw<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013style one-liners while trying to pluck our heartstrings with a few too many sentimental ballads. There\u2019s no law that states musical comedy can\u2019t have deep feels, but the proportions are a little off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Given how scarce good new musicals have been this season\u2014jukebox misfires (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2022\/12\/review-a-beautiful-noise-is-a-portrait-of-the-rock-star-as-depressed-senior-citizen\/\" data-lasso-id=\"2028632\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A Beautiful Noise<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) alternating with transatlantic trash (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2023\/03\/review-bad-cinderellas-glass-slipper-more-like-a-moldy-croc\/\" data-lasso-id=\"2028633\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bad Cinderella<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)\u2014I\u2019m sorry to be mixed on a work with this much talent behind the scenes and charm in the spotlight. <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2022\/11\/three-time-tony-winner-jack-obrien-explains-how-to-goddamn-direct-in-new-memoir\/\" data-lasso-id=\"2028634\">Jack O\u2019Brien<\/a>, the frisky veteran director of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hairspray<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dirty Rotten Scoundrels<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, brings his flair for zany elegance to the cartoonish scenario. The book is by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2023\/03\/robert-horn-on-growing-a-broadway-musical-shucked-from-the-ground-up\/\" data-lasso-id=\"2028635\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Robert Horn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who surpasses his joke-per-second ratio in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tootsie <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with nonstop chicken-fried gags that would slot easily into a Jeff Foxworthy set. And the team behind the score\u2014Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally\u2014are established (and proudly out) stars in the country-music world. The two churn out down-home bangers that celebrate independence, resilience and loyalty, making a case for country as a natural Broadway genre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The plot is a tissue of silliness, placing it directly in the line of 1930s musical comedies that reigned before Rodgers and Hammerstein \u201cintegrated\u201d story and song. In a fantasy pastoral zone known as \u201cCob County\u201d (think Brigadoon but\u2026corn), a sweet young couple is getting hitched: Maizy (Caroline Innerbichler) and Beau (Andrew Durand). Just as the lovers are about say, \u201cI do,\u201d nearby stalks of corn gasp, \u201cI can\u2019t,\u201d and wither away. Since the villagers subsist on corn for their livelihoods and cultural identity, something must be done. Plucky Maizy heads off to the big city\u2014Tampa!\u2014and soon falls under the sway of con-artist and fake podiatrist Gordy (John Behlmann). She sees a sign that advertises a cure for corns and . . . you get the idea. Gordy spots what he thinks are rare gems in a necklace worn by Maizy, which he learns are just lying about in Cob County, and dollar signs shine in his eyes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When not twisting his screwball plot into absurd contortions, Horn pelts us with generous handfuls of puns and one-liners. Arguing over what to do about the crop blight, Beau asks Maizy: \u201cDo you know what your momma would say if she were alive right now?\u201d She replies: \u201cGet me out of this box?\u201d Romancing our heroine in Tampa, Gordy reminisces, \u201cI grew up so poor that if I hadn\u2019t been a boy, I\u2019d have had nothing to play with. The only real friend I ever had was an ear of corn . . . named . . . Clark and McAnally (and music director Jason Howland) understand how country works in a musical-theater context: it\u2019s essentially a heart-bearing genre, with an emotive range from despair to defiant joy, often accompanied by a jaunty optimism that suits the show tune. In contrast to rock, which leans on repetition and intensity, country is about storytelling: heartbreak, prison time, bar brawls, and redemptive romance. Thus Beau, after Maizy leaves him for Gordy, gets a rafter-rattling pick-yourself-up anthem called <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rNfk9alhjdU&amp;list=PLcRNNU4N9gOG8yD7Z-wrrWFLt1BnnMpoL&amp;index=2\" data-lasso-id=\"2028636\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSomebody Will.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Thinking she found a cure for the corn, Maizy celebrates herself as a can-do <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dTmf81PbPv0&amp;list=PLcRNNU4N9gOG8yD7Z-wrrWFLt1BnnMpoL\" data-lasso-id=\"2028637\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWoman of the World.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In the supporting role of Lulu, a kind of reverse Ado Annie\u2014a girl who cain\u2019t say yes\u2014the gender-fluid Alex Newell (Unique from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Glee<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) is a multi-octave wonder, their juicy, chunky frame squeezed into a denim minidress, owning the stage with endless shade and a belt that carves crop circles. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RHuDodgiDIQ\" data-lasso-id=\"2028638\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIndependently Owned,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Lulu\u2019s bluesy anthem as a singleton and corn-liquor distributor who needs no man in her life, is the showstopper of the season. Buttons were surely invented so we could call Innerbichler cute as one. Durand\u2019s affable blend of hunk and fool has weathered well after the unfortunately short-lived <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2018\/07\/26\/in-head-over-heels-go-gos-hits-and-elizabethan-drag-go-hand-in-hand\/\" data-lasso-id=\"2028639\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Head Over Heels<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As two sardonic narrators scene-bombing the narrative, Ashley D. Kelley and Grey Henson are a trifle superfluous to the plot but nonetheless amusing. And ace goofball Kevin Cahoon lands the script\u2019s daffiest punch lines as Peanut, Beau\u2019s dimwitted but good-hearted brother who dispenses bumper-sticker-ready hick wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let me stress, there\u2019s much to enjoy\u2014even as the fun wears thin as corn silk. Previous spooficals that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shucked<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> brings to mind make for unflattering comparisons: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Urinetown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had more bite, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Prom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had more heart and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Book of Mormon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has bigger laughs. Shorn from its earwormy songs and bubbly ensemble, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shucked<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> tends to fade.
