How do we strengthen the science and practice of occupational and environmental health and safety? Since 2021, AIHA has been advancing a series of initiatives designed to elevate OEHS practice through continuous improvement. By connecting researchers and practitioners, promoting evidence-based decision-making, defining principles of good practice, and measuring gaps between current and best-in-class approaches, these efforts are helping move the profession beyond compliance and toward measurable excellence. Recent progress includes an updated national OEHS research agenda, expanded guidance on good practice, significant growth in the number of professionals using statistical tools for exposure decision-making, and the development of continuous improvement plans that set clear goals for the future. These initiatives are creating a stronger foundation for protecting workers, improving workplace conditions, and ensuring the OEHS profession continues to evolve alongside emerging challenges. More than 50 years in occupational and environmental health and safety gives you a unique perspective on how the profession has evolved. In this rebroadcast episode of the Healthier Workplaces Show Podcast, we sat down with industrial hygienist Donna Doganiero, CIH, to reflect on her remarkable career and the changes she has witnessed across the OEHS field. Donna spent more than three decades with the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine, where she led multidisciplinary programs spanning industrial hygiene, ergonomics, radiation safety, vector-borne diseases, and medical safety assessments. She also served as the industrial hygiene consultant to the Army Office of the Surgeon General and received the Commander’s Award for Civil Service Excellence for her participation in the response to the 2001 Pentagon attack. Tune in for Donna’s perspective on where the profession has been, how it has changed, and what her experience can teach today’s OEHS professionals. https://hubs.ly/Q04s-8m70 #HealthierWorkplaces #OEHS #WorkerHealthandSafety

American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) reposted this
Last week, I completed the AI for Occupational Safety and Health Professionals course at the University of Illinois Chicago, and I want to thank Prof. Houshang Darabi and TAs Nikith Rachakonda and Faeze Khademi — because it reinforced what I already knew to be true about integrating AI into EHS workflows or any business process and I'm sharing them below: - DEFINE THE PROBLEM FIRST — Its the highest value step in my opinion, and it belongs to the EHS professional, not a data scientist. - GET THE RIGHT DATA , NOT THE MOST DATA — My initial course project proposal failed because the data I had couldn't reliably solve the problem I defined. My final project ( a JHA Quality Grader) ran on an approved rubric and small human scored data set that actually answered the framing of my problem. - DECIDE UPFRONT WHAT AI WILL NEVER DO — My system graded job hazard analyses and flags what needs work. But in terms of what the best action was -those decisions were off loaded to the qualified human. This was the intentional design of the system, not just a policy sitting somewhere collecting dust. That's what this project taught me, and it's the framework I'll be carrying into the responsible-AI guidance we're developing at the AIHA AI Committee. If you're an OSH professional wondering whether you need to learn to code to work with AI: you don't. You need to define problems well, know your data, and hold the line on human decision-making. This course teaches exactly that.

Fatigue is not just an individual wellness issue. It is an operational risk. Fatigue-related incidents, absenteeism, and reduced performance often reflect how work is scheduled, designed, and managed. Effective fatigue management considers circadian principles, task demands, workplace controls, and leadership accountability rather than placing responsibility solely on workers. AIHA’s Fatigue Management Learning Pathway gives technicians, practitioners, and professionals a flexible way to build a more systematic approach through expert sessions, authoritative readings, practitioner interviews, and curated tools. Earn 9.5 contact hours. Register for courses individually or bundle and save, with up to six months to complete the pathway.
