Viruses are small infectious agents that can replicate only inside the living cells of an organism. Viruses infect all forms of life, including animals, plants, fungi, bacteria and archaea. They are found in almost every ecosystem on Earth and are the most abundant type of biological entity, with millions of different types, although only about 6,000 viruses have been described in detail. Some viruses cause disease in humans, and others are responsible for economically important diseases of livestock and crops.
Virus particles (known as virions) consist of genetic material, which can be either DNA or RNA, wrapped in a protein coat called the capsid; some viruses also have an outer lipid envelope. The capsid can take simple helical or icosahedral forms, or more complex structures. The average virus is about 1/100 the size of the average bacterium, and most are too small to be seen directly with an optical microscope.
The origins of viruses are unclear: some may have evolved from plasmids, others from bacteria. Viruses are sometimes considered to be a life form, because they carry genetic material, reproduce and evolve through natural selection. However they lack key characteristics (such as cell structure) that are generally considered necessary to count as life. Because they possess some but not all such qualities, viruses have been described as organisms at the edge of life.
Selected disease
The Ebola virus disease is a viral haemorrhagic fever of humans and other primates caused by ebolaviruses, RNA viruses in the Filoviridae family. The natural host is thought to be megabats. The virus spreads by contact with body fluids, such as blood. After an incubation period of 2–21 days, nonspecific symptoms including fever, sore throat, muscle pain and headache develop, followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, liver and kidney impairment, and sometimes internal or external bleeding. On average, around half of those infected die, often from hypovolaemic shock. The virus sometimes persists in semen or breast milk for several weeks or months after recovery.
The disease was first found in 1976 by Peter Piot and others in two simultaneous outbreaks, one in Nzara, Sudan and the other in Yambuku, then in Zaire, near the Ebola River, for which the disease is named. Outbreaks have occurred intermittently in tropical regions of sub-Saharan Africa, with a few thousand cases documented before the epidemic in Western Africa of 2013–16, in which nearly 29,000 cases with more than 11,000 deaths were reported. More than 3000 cases were documented in a subsequent epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2018–20, with more than 2000 deaths. Prevention of outbreaks focuses on limiting virus transmission from infected animals to humans, for example, by taking precautions when handling bush meat. Ebola vaccines are now available. Monoclonal antibody treatments can improve outcomes, and a combination of three monoclonals has been licensed.

Viruses and viral infections have affected human history. Epidemics caused by viruses began when human behaviour changed during the Neolithic period, around 12,000 years ago. Previously hunter-gatherers, humans developed more densely populated agricultural communities, which allowed viruses to spread rapidly and subsequently to become endemic. Viruses of plants and livestock also increased, and as humans became dependent on agriculture and farming, diseases such as potyviruses of potatoes and rinderpest of cattle had devastating consequences. Smallpox and measles viruses are among the oldest that infect humans. They first appeared in humans in Europe and North Africa thousands of years ago, having evolved from viruses that infected other animals. Influenza pandemics have been recorded since 1580.
There are an estimated 1031 viruses on Earth. Although scientific interest in them arose because of the diseases they cause, most viruses are beneficial. They drive evolution by transferring genes across species, play important roles in ecosystems, and are essential to life.
Selected outbreak
In the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak, the first cases of the newly emerged SARS coronavirus were reported in November 2002 from the Chinese Guangdong province. The virus soon spread across Asia, with China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore being the worst affected countries; a secondary outbreak occurred in Canada. The rapid initial spread of the outbreak has been in part attributed to China's slow response to the early cases. Over 8,000 people were infected, with a case fatality rate of 11%. Those over 65 years had a much higher mortality rate, greater than 55%. The outbreak was contained by July 2003, and no cases have been reported since 2004.
At the time of the outbreak, the immediate source of SARS coronavirus was thought to have been the masked palm civet (Paguma larvata; pictured), which was sold as food in Guangdong markets. The virus was also found in raccoon dogs, ferret badgers and domestic cats. More recent research has suggested that the natural reservoir could be horseshoe bats.

Selected virus
Hantaviruses (or orthohantaviruses) are a family of RNA viruses in the Bunyavirales order. The enveloped virion is 120–160 nm in diameter and contains a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA genome with three segments. They infect many species of rodents, as well as shrews and moles, without causing disease, and can be transmitted to humans, where they can cause serious disease. Hantaan virus, the first known hantavirus, was discovered in 1976 as the cause of a novel haemorrhagic fever affecting combatants in the Korean War; it can also be caused by other hantaviruses, including Dobrava-Belgrade and Seoul viruses. Some hantaviruses, including Sin Nombre and Bayou, cause a pulmonary syndrome. Others have not yet been associated with human disease.
Unlike other bunyaviruses, hantaviruses are not transmitted by arthropods. Rodents act as the vector, with transmission to humans usually occurring via contact with urine, saliva or faeces, by inhalation of aerosolised excreta or by bite. Little is understood about how hantaviruses cause disease; the main site of viral replication in the body is unknown. Rodent control is important in disease prevention.

Selected biography
Françoise Barré-Sinoussi (born 30 July 1947) is a French virologist, known for being one of the researchers who discovered HIV.
Barré-Sinoussi researched retroviruses in Luc Montagnier's group at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. In 1982, she and her co-workers started to analyse samples from people with a new disease, then referred to as "gay-related immune deficiency". They found a novel retrovirus in lymph node tissue, which they called "lymphadenopathy-associated virus". Their results were published simultaneously with those of Robert Gallo's group in the USA, who had independently discovered the virus under the name "human T-lymphotropic virus type III". The virus, renamed "human immunodeficiency virus", was later shown to cause AIDS. Barré-Sinoussi continued to research HIV until her retirement in 2015, studying how the virus is transmitted from mother to child, the immune response to HIV, and how a small proportion of infected individuals, termed "long-term nonprogressors", can limit HIV replication without treatment. In 2008, she was awarded the Nobel Prize, with Montagnier, for the discovery of HIV.

Selected intervention
Ribavirin is a nucleoside analogue that mimics the nucleoside guanosine. It shows some activity against a broad range of DNA and RNA viruses, but is less effective against dengue fever, yellow fever and other flaviviruses. The drug was first synthesised in the early 1970s by Joseph T. Witkowski and Roland K. Robins. Ribavirin's main current use is against hepatitis C, in combination with pegylated interferon, nucleotide analogues and protease inhibitors. It has been used in the past in an aerosol formulation against respiratory syncytial virus-related diseases in children. Ribavirin has been used in combination as part of an experimental treatment for rabies. It is also the only available treatment for the viruses causing some viral haemorrhagic fevers, including Lassa fever, Crimean–Congo haemorrhagic fever and hantavirus disease, but is ineffective against the filovirus diseases, Ebola and Marburg. Clinical use is limited by the drug building up in red blood cells to cause haemolytic anaemia.
