Welcome to my official website!

This is a rich feast – the product of half a century of steady labour at the coalface of rock and jazz drumming. Have a leisurely browse through the audio and visual samples, archive photos and interviews, extensive FAQs, equipment, reviews, shop and much more, here at the best online resource for all things Bruford.

Reviews, Audio Samples, Interviews and the Timeline have all been refreshed. In Academia offers a link to my academic profile, and a Books section collates my literary output. The Archive section gathers a mass of information and opinion about everything from drum technique to dealing with booking agents; from  reflective pieces on my several bands to thoughts on electronics, the future and where all this is going. Whether explaining jazz to rockers, rock to jazzers, or the whole thing to my grandchildren, I try to do it as honestly and accurately as possible.

Interviews, Reviews and Archive are predominantly of historical interest. Opinions change, and seldom hold good for long, but any wisdom I manage to impart is born of experience. While my 1977 views on progressive rock, for example, might not be of interest to all, they act as a small but significant explanatory marker of how I got from there to here.

I regret that I’m no longer available for chitchat, advice or to review your work, but you are encouraged to leave comments for discussion on the Facebook page. I’d encourage you to subscribe to my YouTube Channel, home to hundreds of live performances.

This resource will occasionally be updated as developments may dictate. I hope you enjoy it.

The last time we tied Bill down to a chair and made him talk – about King Crimson’s 'Larks’ Tongues in Aspic' – it caused quite a stir. So we’ve done it again, this time with one of his earliest songs for his much-loved group Bruford, back in the late 1970s. He explains the ins and outs of ‘Beelzebub’s’ creation and the ‘Rock Goes to College’ TV show that gave it this, its first, public airing. The students seemed to like it OK! The video airs as usual at our regular slot of 3.00 pm UK time on Friday June 26th. Be sure to spread the word around to your friends! See MoreSee Less

Great news! At last! The long awaited album from the fast-rising Pete Roth Trio is available for presale at Cherry Red Records. Excellent stocking filler! Bill’s beloved Tama Drums Starclassic set sounds great on it. See MoreSee Less

This week you have an opportunity to put your feet up, relax and listen to Earthworks’ third studio album ‘All Heaven Broke Loose’ from beginning to end, as a whole piece of music. As frequent flyers on this Channel well know, Bill uses the descriptions to his videos as a great place to tell you some stories about the making of the music and what went on under the surface.

The Coalition Forces liberation of Kuwait, the Romanian dictator Ceaușescu’s orphanages, and the North-African chic of the Paris red light district ‘Pigalle’; all these and more inform much of the music here in what was to be Earthworks’ most socially aware album the band recorded. The video airs on Friday June 12 2026 at our usual time of 3.00 pm UK time. Have fun with it!

From BB: Last night

From BB: Last night, with old two old friends and one new one (drummer Danny Carey), backstage at the BEAT gig in London. Much talk and memories of the creation of the music back in the early 1980s.

The faithful re-creations and some re-interpretations of the old repertoire held up well. Steve Vai's solo on 'Sheltering Sky' alone was worth the price of admission, but moments of brilliance from Tony, Adrian and Danny abounded. Hard to imagine that such fearless music, invented today, would sell-out a 5,000 capacity auditorium. You miss this show at your peril!
