[edit]Inherited from Proto-Sabaki *mwenye ~ *mwinyi. By surface analysis, mw- + -enye.
In Sabaki, cognate with Ngazidja Comorian mwinyi (“owner”) and Giryama mwinyi (“your honor, excellency”). Other Bantu cognates include Kongo mwene (“lord, ruler”) and Chichewa mwiní.
