Schematic of PD at the graft union. A, The four classes of PD identified at graft junctions. Simple PD span the cell wall (shown in brown) between scion and rootstock as a single unbranched pore. Twinned PD consists of two simple PD in close proximity. Branched PD are nonlinear with branching pores. Hemi PD do not span the entirety of the cell wall and so do not provide symplastic connectivity. B, Schematic showing fusion of aligned hemi PD to form a branched PD.
