Hybrid Synergy Drive

Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) is a hybrid system from Toyota first used in 1997, when the Prius was launched.

This system allows the car to run on a thermal engine and an electric engine.

Peculiarity

The electric motor works with an epicyclic gearbox that operates in a way similar to a CVT transmission. The drive-by-wire system provides a control unit for the pedal and the gear lever[1].

This system was discontinued in 2003[2].
