Janeese Lewis George (born April 30, 1988) is an American lawyer, politician, and activist. She is the member of the Council of the District of Columbia from Ward 4 since 2021.[1] She is a member of the Democratic Party. She is the first self-described democratic socialist to be a member of the Council since 1998.[1] Lewis George is the Democratic nominee for mayor of the District of Columbia in the 2026 election.

Early life

Lewis George was born on April 30, 1988 in Washington, D.C.[2][3]

Lewis George got a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics and government from St. John's University.[2] After graduating from St. John's University, she worked in Los Angeles for AmeriCorps for one year.[2] She earned a Juris Doctor from the Howard University School of Law.[3]

DC Council

In 2019, Lewis George announced her campaign for the Council of the District of Columbia. Her campaign was supported by Black Lives Matter, the Working Families Party and the Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America. She would go on to beat incumbent council member Brandon Todd in the primary. She was elected to the Council of the District of Columbia in November 2020.[1]

2026 mayoral campaign

On December 1, 2025, Lewis George announced her candidacy for mayor of the District of Columbia in the 2026 election.[4] In June 2026, she won the Democratic nomination in a landslide victory, winning over 52% of the vote.[5] If elected mayor, she will be the city's first democratic socialist mayor.[3]

Lewis George has been married to Kyle George since 2019. She gave birth to their son in October 2024.[6]
