He ... comes off better than on any of his other albums since arriving at RCA, as a musician as much as a "star" (he'd always had a lot more to say about running his sessions than the critics who loathed his RCA years indicated).
To be honest I was expected much, more worse. To say Elvis's debut didn't charm me is a pretty large understatement, so I was not excited to get into this album. But listening I really feel like these tracks are much more memorable than the ones off his title album. His singing has improved, even if he's still doing that one stupid fucking thing with his voice (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about). I don't really care that most of the tracks are covers. It's just that they're all worse than the original. "Fever" in particular is one of my favorite songs from this era, and this is one of the worst renditions of it that I've heard.
Just a typical Elvis album. A couple brilliant tracks, a lot of filler and a couple decent tracks. There really isn’t too much to say, it’s Elvis’ typical formula that doesn’t switch up too often. I didn’t prefer this to his Self-Titled album though, this had more variety, but Self-Titled had more recognisable tracks!
