Doctor Who: The Sins of Winter: A 12th Doctor audio original
Purchase options and add-ons
Robin Soans reads this original adventure featuring the 12th Doctor and Clara, as played by Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in the BBC TV series.
The TARDIS is summoned to an ‘space cathedral’ by Shadrak Winter, the High Cardinal of the Cult of the Prime Self. Soon to be relieved of his post by way of assassination, Shadrak has used his family’s calling card to bring the Doctor to his aid. His followers have long fled the Sinful, highly contagious slug-like creatures which he himself has succumbed to - and which now imperil the Doctor and Clara.
As Clara discovers more about the Cult of the Prime Self - currently the fourth most popular religion - the Doctor becomes infected, all but lost to appalling guilt and self-recrimination. As he seeks to absolve himself of his perceived sins, Clara must use all her survival instincts to escape the Sinful’s advances and rescue her vulnerable friend.
Robin Soans, who appeared in the 1981 Doctor Who serial The Keeper of Traken as well as in Series 9 in 2015, reads this atmospheric original adventure by James Goss, part of the Tales of Winter quartet of stories. Duration: 1 hour 10 mins approx.

The Sins of Shadrak
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 December 2015A new Doctor Who talking book from the bbc. Telling an all new story for the Twelfth Doctor and Clara, that hasn't been presented before in any other medium.
This is the third in a run of four of these. Each of which sees the TARDIS summoned by a member of the Winter family. Who have a psychic calling card which allows them to summon the Doctor for help. On the worst day of their life. Each story stands alone, though, and you don't need to have heard the first two in order to hear this.
This is basically one long episode, which runs for just under seventy minutes [approx]. The only breaks are the usual cd chapter ones.
Minimal sleeve notes give copyright info, and advertise BBC Audio and various other Doctor Who products.
The reader - who also does all the voices for the characters - is actor Robin Soans. His Doctor Who connection is appearing in the Fourth Doctor story 'The Keeper of Traken' and the recent Twelfth Doctor story 'Face the Raven.' He does an excellent take on the Twelfth Doctor's accent. But he adopts a rather caricature London one for Clara that takes a bit of getting used to. But all in all he is a very good reader.
The story has a lot of background sound effects, designed to illustrate a certain thing about the location. Which are atmospheric but a bit distracting at times.
Said location is a Cathedral. In space. Where dwells Shadrak Winter. Who is head of a religious order. He is about to leave that role. Because he is going to be assassinated. But the cathedral has fallen prey to the Sinful. Slug luke creatures. Anyone who falls prey to their infection will come out in horrible facial marks and fall into despair. If they have done things they feel guilty about or ashamed of.
The Doctor and Clara might just be a in lot of trouble...
After an involving first fifteen minutes or so which set things up and really hold the listener, this does become a little bit of a runaround. It's also rather structurally very similar to the previous release in this series. However it still holds the attention well. And even more so in the final third, not least when Clara makes a very clever discovery.
The Doctor facing up to his guilts is something that has been done a few times before, but this is still an original enough take on it. Because there are some rather interesting philosophical points running throughout, which give you food for thought.
The final quarter of the story does wrap it all up nicely, and in a way you won't expect, which will make you look at all that has come before in a new light.
Another decent listen in a good run of Doctor Who audios.
