    Black Friday 2025 may be remembered as the moment AI’s impact on commerce became measurable. In his latest Fortune article – Algolia's Chief Ecosystem Officer Piyush Patel highlights a notable shift: AI-driven traffic increased 805% year-over-year on Black Friday, while AI-assisted shoppers converted 38% more frequently than traditional shoppers. While the attention will go to AI – the competitive advantage came from something else: context, relevance & real-time retrieval. As AI increasingly intermediates interactions between consumers & brands – competitive advantage will be determined less by access to models & more by access to context. The companies that outperformed were not necessarily those with the most advanced AI capabilities – but the ones with the strongest foundations: • High-quality, retrieval-ready data • Relevance infrastructure that understands intent • The ability to deliver accurate, contextual responses in real time In an AI-mediated world – retrieval becomes strategic.
