Counselor Training Center
As the demands of life become increasingly complex, the Counselor Training Center is here for you
A History of Excellence
The Counselor Training Center (CTC) was established in 1956 as the community counseling clinic for the Counseling and Counseling Psychology programs. The center is devoted to providing confidential counseling services to students, faculty, staff, and the larger community as it prepares the next generation of highly skilled professional counselors. Through the center, clients receive counseling services to enhance their well-being in all areas of life—personal, career, relationships, and family.
The Counselors
CTC counselors are graduate students working toward either a master's degree in counseling or doctoral degree in counseling psychology. They work under the close supervision of faculty members who are licensed psychologists. The counselors-in-training work with individuals, couples and families to help them resolve personal, career, marital, and adjustment issues that are barriers to healthy relationships and productive lives.
Services
The counseling provided is directly related to the concerns presented by the client, including but not limited to:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Personal problems
- Relationships
- Family problems
- Career counseling
How Services are Provided
Clients are assigned to a counselor for a semester and scheduled for standing one-hour weekly appointments for the duration of the semester. Depending on when a client initiates services, he or she could receive up to 12 weeks of services. Clients who wish to continue counseling the following semester may request to do so.
The CTC as a Retention Intervention
Recent research (Baskin et al., 2010) has demonstrated that counseling has a pronounced impact on the academic outcomes of increased GPA and retention. The CTC offers inexpensive counseling and psychotherapy. ASU students are welcome to use these services to address and help resolve issues complicating their experience at the university. Students who struggle with adjusting to the university, with making academic and career decisions, or with addressing personal issues that interfere with academic progress might in particular benefit from referral to the CTC.
As CTC clients, students can participate in weekly counseling sessions to discuss concerns about career, academic progress, relationships, behavioral problems, or emotional difficulties. Counseling and therapy are provided by graduate student trainees who are supervised by Counseling and Counseling Psychology programs faculty. Prospective clients may contact the CTC to schedule an intake appointment, during which primary concerns and related issues will be assessed. In the sessions after the intake, the counselor will work with the client to develop and implement a treatment plan to move toward the client’s goals. Counseling at the CTC can play a role in student retention as well as promoting general well-being.
