What image format works fastest, with least bandwidth, on Android and Web? Our tips, part 2 of 5.

Wondering what image format to use to optimize for billions?

On the Web, images constitute almost 60% of average page weight. To optimize for billions of users, WebP image formats compress better for lossless and lossy compression — potentially resulting in images more than 25% smaller than JPEG formats. You should also use CSS rather than images for gradients, shadows, rounded corners, and background textures, features supported by all modern browsers. Use responsive image techniques (see tutorial below) to optimize image choice.

On Android, Vector Asset Studio lets you import vector images for graphical assets like icons into vector drawables, which can be resized for different screen densities without loss of image quality. For photos or non-graphical assets, WebP image formats are similarly recommended — it’s not just for the web! You can specify images be sent in this format as well, transforming them on the client before upload, to save data. The format is fully supported from Android 4.2.

This is the second of five weekly posts we’re sharing on how to optimize images on Android and Web for billions of users. Check out our full lists of resources at g.co/dev/billions.

Here's a great example of how to use AnimatedVectorDrawable's to delight your users by +Nick Butcher

I recently saw a question on /r/androiddev asking how to implement a fancy animation… and decided to demonstrate how to do it using AnimatedVectorDrawable.

Here's a breakdown of how I did it: https://medium.com/@crafty/animation-jump-through-861f4f5b3de4

Or you can jump straight to the code here: https://gist.github.com/nickbutcher/97143b3240682e5c5851fe45b49fde93

Why not just support SVG? It's the industry standard for vector animation. Developers can make one and use it on Android and the web as well.

This is frustrating. Why can't a standard SVG just work? Why does it need to be modified this much to work?

I am and I respect the user. Yes I am annoyed if I have to respond to a bad review complaining about a bug that was fixed ages ago. But I can show others this way that I care and provide support.

Talking about Web Apps is just the third category you threw into the bowl. They have a separate name because they are separate. They might be a mixture of the other two but it is like a Phablet. It is a Phablet. Not a Phone and not a Tablet. It is a Phablet.
You might want to compare a Phone with a Phablet, or a Phablet with a Tablet, but don't compare a Tablet with a Phone.

If you have done the REST API right, there is no real work in maintaining it. Versioning an API FTW!
Also you can, and it would be a valid UX case, suggest the user via SnackBar message, that you suggest to update the app.
If you force it, I will instantly remove the app without a second thought.

Also the Play Store already supports the settings that he will not get informed when an App was updated automatically. So your silent update already works if the user wants it. He will only see the update while it is updating.
