Tip for billions: use placeholder palette values while images load on slow connections.

Images for Billions #4

When your Android app is doing the work of fetching images over a network, you can leave your users waiting if connections are slow. Two tips to keep things feeling speedy:

First, prioritize text data requests before images. This lets your user navigate past loading images that they don’t need anyway.

Next, display placeholder colors while fetching images. The palette support library lets you select a placeholder color block based on the requested image’s color balance, and set that as the background in an ImageView, so the look of your app stays consistent while loading images.

This is the fourth of five weekly posts we’re sharing on how to optimize images on Android and Web for billions of users. Check out our full lists of resources at g.co/dev/billions.

+Christophe Dongieux that's was my first thought. :O I assume we need to store it in the feed right next to the image url. So, why the hell should I use the Palette on Android side? There are many other tool to do the same on server side.

New Android Wear Developer Preview 4

Today we are launching the fourth developer preview for Android Wear 2.0, including new features in authentication (Google Sign-In and OAuth), in-app billing, and the ability to open Play store listings or URLs on your phone from your Android Wear app.

Many of you have told us that the swipe-to-dismiss gesture in Android Wear 1.0 is a time saver. We agree. Not only has swipe-to-dismiss been reintroduced into this preview, we have also added a new class SwipeDismissFrameLayout to help you implement custom interactions for Views and Fragments.

Lastly, we have made a number of enhancements to WearableNavigationDrawer, WearableRecyclerView and ComplicationData. Let us know what you think and please send us your feedback!

This is good, but I think it'll take more that nudging to get developers to make apps that feel like Android apps.

I really hope Google will not just make blog posts but follow through with this and genuinely promote apps that feel like Android apps.

WebView and Symantec Certificate Transparency Issue

Starting with version 53, WebView required that all certificates issued by Symantec Corporation after 1 June 2016 must comply with Chrome's Certificate Transparency policy. This was announced last year and implemented in Chrome and WebView 53 which was released at the beginning of September 2016. More information about Certificate transparency is available here.

Due to a bug in Chrome’s implementation of Certificate Transparency, pages served with Symantec certificates will not load in WebView versions 53 or 54, starting 10 weeks after each WebView release.

WebView team maintains a public announcement and FAQ here. For questions, you can use android-webview-dev email list.
