Changes to Device Identifiers in Android O

Android O introduces some improvements to help provide user control over the use of identifiers. These improvements include:

- limiting the use of device-scoped identifiers that are not resettable
- updating the Android O Wi-Fi stack in conjunction with changes to the Wi-Fi chipset firmware used by Pixel, Pixel XL and Nexus 5x phones to randomize MAC addresses in probe requests
- updating the way that applications request account information and providing more user-facing control

Developer Preview 3 of Android Things

Today we are releasing the Developer Preview 3 of Android Things, which now includes Bluetooth! Support for Bluetooth and Bluetooth LE APIs is available across all supported hardware platforms. We have also added support for USB Host, which allows a user space application to talk to a custom USB device. Ready to host an #io17extended event?

Bring your local developer community together and take part in the #io17 festivities on May 17-19 by hosting an #io17extended event in your neighborhood. Your event might even get a live shout out during the keynote and/or be featured on the I/O website!

The agenda for your local event is totally up to you. You can livestream the I/O keynote & sessions, invite local guest speakers, demo products, organize a hackathon, and more. To help in your planning, take a look at the first version of the 2017 schedule which is now live on the I/O website (goo.gl/uSnc26). You’ll find a variety of exciting topics like #TensorFlow, #Firebase, #Android, and #VR! We’ll continue to update the schedule up until the event, so check back often for updates and new additions.

To get started with organizing an I/O Extended event:
- Create a public RSVP info page for your event using an event platform of your choice.
- Register your public event on the I/O Extended website (goo.gl/sUAr7E) to have it featured on the official I/O Extended map. Note: If you’re a GDG, please also register your event on developer.google.com/events.
- Read through the I/O Extended 2017 Organizer Guide (goo.gl/k6sWQU) where you’ll find lots of tips on hosting a successful event, as well as the official logos to help promote your event.
- Join the I/O Extended 2017 Organizers Google+ Community (goo.gl/PBOknT) to hear the latest from us and exchange ideas with other hosts.

Update your app to work with larger aspect ratios on new Android devices

To deliver more immersive experiences to their users, some Android OEMs are launching new, super widescreen smartphones. Today, Samsung announced a new flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S8, featuring a new display with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. Earlier this year, LG also announced their flagship device, the LG G6, with a screen aspect ratio of 18:9. To take advantage of new super widescreen Android devices, you'll need to update your app to work with larger aspect ratios.
