Updates

  • The Serval WS portable workstation, one of our most capable Linux workstations, just got refreshed with the new Intel® Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, giving even more headroom to an already powerful machine packed with NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti graphics, up to 96GB RAM, and up to 12TB of storage. Process code, run simulations, or work with large scientific datasets, all in crisp 240Hz QHD. Link to the upgraded Serval WS in the comments! #Linux #workstation #system76

  • Open source software is now exempt from age attestation laws in Colorado and California, and it didn't happen by accident. System76 CEO Carl Richell shares how our team worked alongside the open source community and legislators in both states to secure meaningful exemptions that reflect what open source actually is: privacy-respecting, non-commercial, and built on collaboration. Link to the full story is in the comments below! #Linux #opensource #system76

  • Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is now available as a pre-loaded option on System76 hardware. Getting here took a little longer than planned. DDOS attacks on Ubuntu's infrastructure slowed things down, so we did what we do: built our own infrastructure, dropped the Launchpad dependency, and made the whole release process faster and more resilient for the future. When you configure your next machine, you can now choose from: • Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (new!) • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS • Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS with COSMIC DE (our favorite!) #Linux #Ubuntu #System76 #PopOS #OpenSource

  • The Verge just published a great piece on how age-verification laws are creating an unexpected challenge for the open-source community. A gift link to the article is in the comments and is valid for the next four days. Bills like Colorado's SB26-051 were designed with commercial platforms like iOS and Android in mind. But as written, they could have pulled Linux and other open-source operating systems into their scope, creating compliance burdens that don't fit how open-source software is actually built and distributed. Our founder, Carl Richell, has been one of the voices engaging directly with lawmakers on this. As he testified before a Colorado House committee: "Open-source software ensures that everyone, regardless of age or background, can learn, experiment, and build at the most fundamental level." Colorado's bill ultimately passed with an open-source exemption, but the broader fight is far from over, with similar legislation moving in California, Illinois, and New York.
