Title: Sri-Lanka; Air Force inducts ex-US Navy TH-57 helicopter
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has formally inducted 10 US-supplied Bell 206 TH-57 Sea Ranger helicopters into service.
The SLAF said the helicopters were commissioned at a ceremony at SLAF Base Ratmalana on 23 June, following their transfer from the US government. The acquisition follows a January 2026 announcement by the US Embassy in Sri Lanka that the helicopters would be provided at no cost under the Excess Defense Articles (EDA) programme.
The Texas-built helicopters “were previously flown by the US Navy for pilot training and utility missions”, the US Embassy said on 23 June. The embassy added that the Sea Rangers were delivered as mission-ready platforms, having been in active US Navy service until 2025.
Photographs published by the embassy in January showed TH-57C models being prepared for delivery to Sri Lanka. The TH-57C is an advanced instrument–rating version of the Bell 206B-3 JetRanger III, configured as a primary trainer.
According to the SLAF, the acquisition will enhance its rotary-wing pilot training programme and support operational readiness. The embassy added that the helicopters will bolster “Sri Lanka's capacity to respond to humanitarian crises and secure its maritime domain”.

Title: Estonia; MoD accepts first IRIS-T SLM battery
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Diehl Defence has handed over the first IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense system to the Estonian Air Defence Wing at Ämari Air Base, extending Estonia’s air defense reach beyond its existing short-range systems.
The system can engage aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles at ranges of up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) and altitudes of up to 20 kilometers (12.4 miles).
A single IRIS-T SLM fire unit typically includes multiple launchers, a radar, and a tactical control center, supported by vehicles for reloading, maintenance, and spare parts.
The system’s mobility enables rapid redeployment in response to shifting threats and operational demands.
Estonia procured three IRIS-T SLM systems in 2023 as part of its largest-ever defense investment, with the remaining units expected to be delivered next year.
Estonian Air Force Commander Brigadier General Riivo Valge said the system’s key advantage is its high engagement altitude, which prevents adversaries from simply flying above coverage.

Title: France ; Air Force to modify A400M Into C4ISR platform
Deadline:
Country:
Description
France has contracted Airbus Defence and Space to equip the A400M military transport aircraft with new multi-mission capability, enabling command-and-control of air and ground assets and supporting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations.
Under the Parallel Mission System (PMS) upgrades, a new mission system will be installed in the cargo hold to manage remotely deployed effectors, while tactical situational awareness consoles will enable operators to monitor sensor data and coordinate missions.
According to Airbus, the new mission system is designed to integrate additional sensors and communications systems. This builds on earlier plans to upgrade the A400M to a high-bandwidth communications hub, enabling it to link manned and unmanned systems across domains and support electronic warfare and the deployment of remote carriers.
Previously, the A400M relied on narrowband communications for voice and basic data, limiting cross-domain information sharing.
The PMS upgrades also include an optronic sensor to enhance ISR capabilities.
The PMS kit will be installed on the first French A400M in 2027 and flight-tested in 2028 before being rolled out across the French Air and Space Force fleet.
Airbus Defence and Space is also exploring additional A400M capabilities, including long-range jamming, a mothership role for the in-flight deployment of drones and missiles, increased payload capacity of up to 40 tonnes (40,000 kg), and firefighting operations, further broadening the aircraft’s mission set to meet evolving operational requirements.
France received its first A400M in 2013 and currently operates a fleet of 25 aircraft.

Title: Switzerland; MoD initiates talks to acquire Patriot alternative
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Switzerland has started contract negotiations with manufacturers from France, Israel and South Korea for a second air defence system following delays to its order of U.S. Patriot missile systems, the government said on Wednesday.
Switzerland in 2022 ordered Patriot missile defence systems made by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin( for expected delivery by 2026-2028, but the timeline had been pushed back four to five years due to the war in Ukraine.
The Swiss defence ministry said it had now restarted previously paused payments to the U.S. over the Patriot system, and that delivery could be possible from 2027.
The ministry said it had begun talks with manufacturers from France, Israel, and South Korea for a second system, without saying which. National armaments director Urs Loher told a press conference that it would not be Israel's Arrow defence system.
Swiss defence minister Martin Pfister said the second order would likely be significantly more expensive than the initial Patriots price tag of around 2 billion francs ($2.5 billion).

Title: Germany; Navy terminates cancels purchase of six F126 Frigates
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Berlin is ending the largest naval project in its recent history after accumulated delays and cost overruns made the continuity of the contract led by Damen unviable. The German Navy will now rely on eight MEKO A-200 frigates specializing in anti-submarine warfare.
The German Ministry of Defence has decided to definitively cancel the programme of the six F126 frigates, considered so far the largest military shipbuilding project undertaken by the German Navy since World War II.
The decision, advanced by the magazine Der Spiegel and confirmed on June 24 by the department headed by Minister Boris Pistorius, puts an end to an initiative initially valued at about 10,000 million euros that accumulated significant delays, cost overruns and contractual problems.
The cancellation is one of the biggest recent setbacks for the European defence naval industry and opens a new stage in the modernisation of Deutsche Marine.
Instead of the F126s, Berlin intends to acquire eight MEKO A-200 DEU frigates built by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), with a strong emphasis on anti-submarine warfare, a capability that the German government considers a priority for both its national needs and its NATO commitments.
The F126 program was awarded in June 2020 to the Dutch group Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS). The plan initially envisaged the construction of four multipurpose frigates, later expanded to six units, intended to progressively replace the F123-class ships.
The new frigates were designed as large platforms, with nearly 10,000 tonnes of displacement, high modularity and the ability to operate for long periods in international deployments. The first unit was due to reach its initial operational capability by mid-2028 and all six vessels were due to be delivered by 2033.

Title: Canada; MoD initiates negotiations to acquire Leonardo M-346 Advanced Jet Trainer
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Canada is moving to acquire Leonardo’s M-346 advanced jet trainer as part of a broader defence agreement with Italy, a development announced following talks between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France on June 16, 2026. Beyond a potential aircraft purchase, the move would strengthen the Royal Canadian Air Force’s ability to train fighter pilots domestically, reducing reliance on external training arrangements while supporting long-term readiness for NORAD and NATO operations.
The M-346 combines high-performance flight characteristics with embedded simulation systems that replicate modern air combat environments, allowing pilots to train for complex missions without tying up frontline fighter fleets. Its ability to support advanced tactical training and emerging crewed-uncrewed teaming concepts positions it as a platform that could help prepare future Canadian aircrews for increasingly digital, networked, and contested operational environments.
On June 16, 2026, Canada confirmed a new step in its defence relationship with Italy as Prime Minister Mark Carney met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the margins of the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Évian, France. According to the official readout published by the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada, both leaders launched negotiations for Canada’s purchase of Leonardo M-346 advanced jet trainer aircraft. The announcement is relevant beyond a future aircraft contract, as it points to Canada’s intention to strengthen Royal Canadian Air Force training, reduce dependence on external training solutions and build a more sovereign pipeline for future fighter pilots.
The M-346 is a twin-engine, tandem-seat advanced jet trainer designed and produced by Leonardo, with a configuration intended to prepare military pilots for the transition toward modern combat aircraft. Leonardo describes the aircraft as the core of an integrated training system combining the aircraft, embedded simulation, ground-based training, mission planning tools and integrated logistic support. Its fully digital flight controls, quadruple-redundant fly-by-wire system, Head-Up Display, Multi-Function Displays, Hands On Throttle And Stick controls and Pilot Activated Attitude Recovery System are designed to provide a training environment close to that of current-generation fighters while maintaining the safety margins required for advanced instruction.

Title: Ukraine, Germany; MoDs sign agreement for ballistic missile shield
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Ukraine and Germany have signed an agreement to jointly develop anti-ballistic capabilities and interceptor missiles as part of a common European solution to counter increasingly sophisticated ballistic missile threats.
The initiative aims to combine Ukraine’s efforts to develop an indigenous anti-ballistic missile capability with European industrial expertise in next-generation missile-defense technologies.
While no specific project has been named, the initiative could be linked to the Freyja anti-ballistic missile system being developed by Ukrainian firm Fire Point.
Just days before the signing, Fire Point and German sensor specialist Hensoldt entered into a strategic partnership to integrate Hensoldt’s TRML-4D radar into the Freyja system.
The TRML-4D is already in service with Ukraine, supporting the roughly 10 IRIS-T SLM air-defense batteries operational in the country, as well as weapons-detection missions.
Project Freyja
The project comes amid significant advances in Ukraine’s domestic defense sector, which now provides around half of the country’s military requirements.
It also highlights Fire Point’s evolution from a manufacturer of long-range strike drones into a developer of increasingly sophisticated missile systems, including the FP-7 ballistic missile, which is reported to have a range of about 200 kilometers (124 miles).
Fire Point co-founder Denis Shtilerman previously described Freyja as a foundation for a future pan-European air and missile defense architecture, bringing together Ukrainian interceptor technology with European sensors, command-and-control systems, and missile-guidance components.
