Coming out of northern England in the late 1970s, few bands have had the impact and influence of Joy Division and New Order. Joy Division were formed in the slipstream of punk but, thanks to frontman Ian Curtis’s singular voice and Martin Hannett’s ambitious production, soon stretched beyond the genre’s sonic limits to create something dark and new. After Curtis’s heartbreaking suicide, the surviving members picked themselves up and created the future as New Order. Written by music critic and journalist Mayer Nissim (Digital Spy, Gold Radio, NME), Joy Division and New Order: Album by Album deep dives into both groups’ studio albums, pulling together a comprehensive narrative of two of the most vital bands in pop history. From their rehearsals at TJ Davidson’s in Manchester to their number one records, it takes you through their fallouts, reunions and fragmentations to their lasting legacy. This book includes extensive interviews with singer and guitarist Bernard Sumner and estranged bass player Peter Hook, alongside conversations with six key band collaborators: graphic designer Peter Saville, Scissor Sisters frontwoman Ana Matronic, producer Stephen Street, recording engineer Michael Johnson and filmmakers Charles Sturridge and Grant Gee. It also features photographs by Anton Corbijn and official group snapper Warren Jackson, as well as full colour reproductions of all Peter Saville’s groundbreaking album sleeves and a complete discography of both bands.

I’ve absolutely loved this book about Joy Division and New Order. Full disclosure: I went to school with the author. But Mayer is one of the best people you can talk to about music. Someone who understands how important and truly transcendent music is. His taste is incredibly eclectic and his enthusiasm for music has been infectious for as long as I’ve known him. He’s done something very special with this book. It’s a journey through every album by Joy Division and New Order interspersed with interviews with the key players involved and full of insight.

It made me appreciate just how special these bands were. How much genuine ground they broke. I remember discovering them through True Faith on a ‘Now!’ compilation we had at home and then going through their back catalogue. I was young and while I had an emotional connection with their music, I didn’t understand at all how the music was made and how bold it was in its original context. I also didn’t understand the dynamics within the band - how Peter Hook pushed for them to conjour songs out of live jams while Bernard Sumner preferred to sit alone with synthesisers and sequencers to create songs that didn’t really need the others all that much. When it worked and they pushed through the tension it was glorious. But they fell out just like the rock’n’roll cliches they tried to avoid becoming and while they’ve gone on to do great things separately - it’s a shame they couldn’t keep it together.

But if you appreciate these bands then this book is essential. Mayer has done a wonderful job and I’ve enjoyed diving deep back into the New Order and Joy Division back catalogue as well as discovering albums I’d overlooked before. Buy it now!

I have a few albums by both bands and after some 40 years, I still enjoy their music. It’s difficult to look back and remember just how innovative their sound was and this biography provides really interesting insight into every aspect; the people, the times, the albums, recording and touring. I’ve read Hooky’s autobiography which was interesting but rather one sided, so this book is a much wider take. I think my only criticism is that there’s a lot of techie detail around equipment and r3cordings which, as a non musician, didn’t interest me greatly. But I skipped those bits and overall found the book filled with relevant detail about the band. Given their background and the seedy clubs they were working, their success was remarkable. Perseverance and belief carried them upwards to fame and recognition and it’s a tragedy that Ian Curtis didn’t live to enjoy the success. It was a bumpy road, a group of lads unprepared to navigate the music industry but creating a sound that’s as fresh and vibrant today as it was all those years ago. A genuinely enjoyable read which I’m taking to heart as I revisit all their albums with a new and informed view of the background and some of the technicalities.
