Like prospectors\nsifting the sand in a river bed for gold, computational social science\nresearchers are looking into the streams of social media for insight\non our social interactions.  Enabled by the availability of and easy\naccessibility to vast amounts of data generated by social entities, as\nwell as by powerful computing hardware and algorithms, its researchers\nconduct observations of social interaction and experiments testing\nsocial theories in scales not realizable before. In this paper, after\na short review of the characteristics of this new area, we discuss\nissues related to the types of data sought and used, and some of the\nchallenges in collecting and interpreting the data. Throughout the\npaper we also examine some of the pitfalls awaiting and the standards\nthat need to be observed.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1515\/itit-2014-1047","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,26]],"date-time":"2014-09-26T12:13:00Z","timestamp":1411733580000},"page":"230-239","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Sifting the sand on the river bank: Social media as a source for research data"],"prefix":"10.1515","volume":"56","author":[{"given":"Panagiotis","family":"Metaxas","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Wellesley College, Wellesley, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Eni","family":"Mustafaraj","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Wellesley College, Wellesley, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"374","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,30]]},"container-title":["it - Information Technology"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/itit-2014-1047\/xml","content-type":"application\/xml","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/itit-2014-1047\/pdf","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,6,23]],"date-time":"2021-06-23T11:44:08Z","timestamp":1624448648000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/itit-2014-1047\/html"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,30]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"5","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,30]]},"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2014,10,28]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1515\/itit-2014-1047"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1515\/itit-2014-1047","relation":{},"ISSN":["1611-2776","2196-7032"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1611-2776","type":"print"},{"value":"2196-7032","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,30]]}}}
