Vince Gilligan finally made his grand return to television last year with Pluribus on Apple TV and once again captured the attention of critics and audiences, who hailed the series as a brilliantly shot original sci-fi carried by an all-timer performance by Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka. Less acclaimed, however, are the fictional Winds of Wycaro "speculative historical romance" novels that Carol wrote. The series, centering on the sizzling adventures of the sand pirate Lucasia and her love interest, Raban, had many fans enraptured in-universe before the Joining, but the author herself was not one of them, calling her books "mindless crap" as she wrapped up the tour for the latest installment, Bloodsong of Wycaro. Alas, viewers can't judge its quality for themselves beyond what little details the show has shared, but there is a new fantasy novel releasing next week that may scratch a similar itch and, critically, hasn't been disowned by its writer.
