Synopsys, Inc. is an American software company based in Sunnyvale, California. It makes computer programs that help engineers design computer chips. These chips are used in computers, phones, cars, and many other machines.

Synopsys is one of the three biggest electronic design automation (EDA) companies in the world. The other two are Cadence Design Systems and Siemens.[1]

Synopsys was started in 1986 in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The founders were Aart de Geus, David Gregory, Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, and Bill Krieger. The first name of the company was Optimal Solutions.

In 1987, the company changed its name to Synopsys and moved to Mountain View, California.[2]

In February 1992, Synopsys became a public company. People could now buy and sell shares of the company on the stock market.[3]

In January 2024, Sassine Ghazi became the new CEO of Synopsys. He took over from Aart de Geus, who had led the company for many years.[4]

In July 2025, Synopsys bought another software company called Ansys for about $35 billion. This was the biggest purchase in the company's history.[5]

In November 2025, Synopsys said it would lay off about 10% of its workers. The layoffs were part of changes to the company after buying Ansys.[6]

What Synopsys does

[change | change source]

Synopsys makes software that helps engineers design computer chips. A modern computer chip can have billions of small parts. Engineers could not design these chips by hand. Synopsys software helps them plan and test the chips before they are made in a factory.

The company also makes:

  • Reusable parts that other companies can use to build their own chips.
  • Software that checks computer code for problems.

Synopsys has offices in many countries. Its main office is in Sunnyvale, California. The company also has large offices in India, Armenia, and other countries. About 28,000 people work for Synopsys around the world.[7]
