About

Synopsis

Perfect Crime is a funny, sexy thriller about three psychiatrists, a detective, a crazy patient and at least one dead body. A man is murdered -- maybe. Did his wife kill him? The detective investigating the case thinks so - until he starts to fall in love with her and the husband mysteriously reappears.

The New York Times calls Perfect Crime "an urban legend... a crackling thriller." The New Yorker calls it "a cunning little whodunit" and UPI says "If Harold Pinter, Tennessee Williams and Agatha Christie ever sat around a bar one night and said 'Let's write a murder mystery,' they might have come up with Perfect Crime."

"Perfect Crime is something of a phenomenon," says Fox Five News. Now in its 24th year, Perfect Crime  "may well outdistance The Mousetrap" says WNEW. What is the perfect crime? Come and see for yourself!

Awards

Perfect Crime is the longest running play on or Off-Broadway - ever. Its star, Catherine Russell, is known as the "Cal Ripkin of Broadway" because she has missed only four performances in over 22 years - all for her siblings'  weddings.

    Impeccable

    by Ebony on 6/10/26

Second time around seeing the play and I must say it’s very well written and thought out. Those who claim that the details are too prominent throughout the play’s storyline, fail to connect all pieces together and appreciate how not a single scene or line is neglected. Everything ties into an intentional narrative in the end, while still leaving room for interpretation. The actors played their parts very well beyond doubt. Would 100% recommend seeing.

    Such a disappointment!

by Ryan B on 2/25/26The Theater Center - New York

I’m sorry but this show was terrible!!!! We didn’t even stay for the second part of the show because we were falling asleep during the first half. Broadway should not advertise this show because it makes them look bad!!!! This is quite possibly the worst I’ve ever seen.

    Waste of time and money!

by Steve on 12/30/25The Theater Center - New York

The play was advertised as a funny, romantic, mystery...it was none of these. No basis was established as to what was happening or where the play was going. Very confusing and not amusing. The best part of the show was that it had an intermission which allowed us to leave and not waste anymore time.

    Not our cup of tea

Not our cup of tea. Don't see it. Boring. Typical off broadway over hyped show.

    Lost in the details

by Wtutz on 11/21/25The Theater Center - New York

The theater is small which is what I'd expect for an off Broadway production. The audience consisted of 24 people...most were seated in the first 3 rows. For some reason, or twisted seat assignment algorithm, we were row J; why? The problem with row J is the speaker they use to play Alexa's background music etc... is directly overhead in row I and it's so loud that we could barely hear the actors lines ( not mic'd). We may have lost the entire plot in the opening because we missed most of the dialog. I cringed every time Alexa began, straining to hear the dialog. Okay..I should have taken action and moved my seats, next time...but i respect reserved seats. Details of Perfect crime are critical..you cannot afford to miss any clues.... The fact that you are handed a double sided "clue sheet"as you are leaving the show, tells me that most audiences leave just as bewildered; "what did I just see?"

    Engaging storyline

by Angie on 10/22/25The Theater Center - New York

Is was in a small, intimate older theater which made it very much like you were really there with the actors. They were engaging and wonderful actors. I think it was a little overpriced as the theater wasn’t actually full at all like it looked online. You might be able to get day of tickets cheaper. Then it would be worth it. The story was engaging enough for me to enjoy. My daughter also liked that they had Izzy mocktails which is something never offered on broadway. This was an interesting off broadway show. The actress has never called in sick since she started in 1987, so that was very interesting! I never got bored watching it!

    This was awful

    by AD on 10/19/25

This play is not up to Broadway, or even off-off-off Broadway standards. The plot is impossible to discern, the acting is campy and careless, the set is tired. The little theatre itself is cute! We walked out at intermission and enjoyed a walk around Manhattan, and never gave a single thought to who killed whom and why. This sad little play needs to retire.

    Very amateur

by Kim on 10/11/25The Theater Center - New York

My husband and I walked into the theater and wondered why there were so few people seated. Now I know why, the acting was very amateur, the plot line not at all strong, in fact, it was so bad that we left at intermission.

    Meh

by Paul S on 10/1/25The Theater Center - New York

Perhaps my expectations were high after having seen two Broadway shows in the week prior, but while Perfect Crime made for a perfectly fine night out, it really can't compare to a Broadway production. Catherine Russell has some incredible stamina -- I don't understand how she can do this night after night for almost 40 years, without a day off! For that, she deserves an incredible amount of respect. But, at times, it did feel like she was rushing through it, as the lines have become so rote. And, the age difference between her and Asher makes for some slightly cringe-worthy kissing scenes. The story itself is somewhat hard to follow, especially as incredibly minor details that get mentioned very quickly early on wind up being very meaningful. As evidence for how hard to follow it is, they hand you a 2-page document as you leave, explaining everything. OK, I appreciate a show that leaves you scratching your head a bit when you leave, but if you need two densely-packed pages to explain what happened after the fact, you may want to re-think the writing. For $60, I had an enjoyable time. But that's probably the maximum end of the value here.
