UNHCR helps to save lives and build better futures for the millions of people forced to flee their homes.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency works to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution or war at home.

Since 1950, we have faced multiple crises on multiple continents, and provided vital protection and assistance to refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced and stateless people, many of whom have nobody left to turn to.

We help to save lives and build better futures for millions forced from home.

Key facts and figures

117.8 million people worldwide are forcibly displaced
68% hosted in low- and middle-income countries
Global Trends 2025
UNHCR’s Global Trends report presents key statistical trends and the latest official statistics on refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced and stateless persons.

At the end of 2025, there were 41.6 million refugees globally, including refugees under UNHCR’s mandate, people in a refugee-like situation, other people in need of international protection and Palestine refugees under UNRWA’s mandate, as well as 9 million asylum-seekers pending a decision on their asylum claims.

The global number of refugees fell during 2025 with a decrease of 3 per cent compared to the end of 2024. This change reflects a sharp increase in the returns of refugees, mostly to Afghanistan, Syria and Sudan.
