Biography
Professor Sir Edgeworth David KBE CMG DSO FRS was a Welsh born Australian geologist and Antarctic explorer. He was a household name in his lifetime, and his most significant achievements were discovering the major Hunter Valley coalfield in New South Wales and for leading the first expedition to reach the South Magnetic Pole. He also served with distinction in The Great War in the newly-created Australian Mining Corps, after enlisting at the age of 57.Tannatt William Edgeworth David was born on 28th January 1858 in the rectory of St Fagans, Glamorganshire, Wales. He was the eldest child of the Reverend William David, a sometime fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, and his wife Margaret Harriette, (née Thomson).
On 30th July 1885 at St Paul's Church of England (now Anglican Church), Canterbury, in the Colony of New South Wales (Australia), Edgeworth married Caroline Martha (Cara) Mallett, whom he had met on the voyage to Sydney in 1882 on the Potosi, which arrived in Sydney on the 26th November 1882.
In September 1920, he was created Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) for his services during the war.
Aged 76 years, Sir Edgeworth David died of lobar pneumonia on 28th August 1934 in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and was accorded a state funeral by the Commonwealth and New South Wales governments in St Andrew's Church of England (Anglican) Cathedral. His remains were then cremated with military honours. He was survived by his wife, son and two daughters
It is also worth noting that the main street of Waitara in the Hornsby Shire Council area is known as Edgeworth David Avenue in his honour.
In 1968 Sir Edgeworth David was honoured on a postage stamp issued by Australia Post.
