Biography
Samuel Gobat was a Swiss Calvinist who became an Anglican missionary in Africa and was the Protestant Bishop of Jerusalem from 1846 until his death.
Career and achievements:
- 1821: Joined Basel Mission
- From 1825: Worked with the English "Church Missionary Society" in the Middle East, Malta, and mainly Ethiopia
- Close contact with Christian Friedrich Spittler in Basel (founder of the Pilgrim Mission)
- 1846: Appointed second Protestant bishop of Jerusalem by the King of Prussia
- Shifted missionary work from Jews to Oriental Christians (mission to Muslims was forbidden)
- Established schools, hospitals, and social institutions across Palestine
- Contributed indirectly to the renewal of Palestine in the 19th century
