For most of its four-year existence, Fire Point has been Ukraine’s most consequential defense company, but it could rarely be described with confidence. That changed at Eurosatory 2026 in Paris, where the Kyiv-based missile and drone maker exhibited under its own name for the first time, with its own stand in Hall 4, rather than folded into a national pavilion. On display, stripped of seekers and warheads for the show floor, sat the company’s entire declared missile family: the FP-1 and FP-2 strike drones, the FP-5 “Flamingo” cruise missile, and the FP-7 and FP-9 ballistic missiles, the last two shown publicly for the first time.

The bigger news came alongside the hardware. On June 16, Fire Point signed a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s Hensoldt to jointly develop FREYJA, a ground-based system designed to detect and intercept ballistic missiles at a fraction of the cost of the Patriot interceptor inventory, which has dwindled in recent months. It is a striking pivot for a company that, less than four years ago, did not exist.

Turning a Private Garage into a National Asset

Fire Point traces its origin to October–November 2022, when a small group of friends from outside the defense world, with backgrounds in construction, filmmaking and drone camera work, game design and architecture, bought a shell company and redirected it toward long-range strike drones. Development of the first product, the FP-1, was largely self-funded: co-founder and chief designer Denys Shtilerman is reported to have put up roughly $2 million of his own money before the drone was formally adopted for service in May 2023 and flew its first combat mission that September.

Growth since has been fast even by the standards of Ukraine’s wartime defense sector. The company reports it went from under 20 employees in early 2023 to a workforce it now describes as roughly 6,000, spread across some 300,000 square meters of floor space. Independent reporting on headcount and site numbers has varied over time and is difficult to verify against a company that was, until recently, deliberately opaque; press accounts from mid-2026 describe production spread across roughly 80 sites inside Ukraine plus one facility in Denmark. What is consistent across sources is the logic behind the dispersal: final assembly is intentionally spread into small workshops, vehicle-repair garages and other repurposed civilian buildings rather than concentrated in a handful of large plants, precisely because large plants are easy for Russia to target. One of the recent Russian attacks on Kyiv reportedly destroyed a plant where FP-5 missile components are produced.

FP-1 and FP-2 – One Way Attack (OWA) UAVs

The FP-1 deep-strike variant and shorter-range FP-2 remain Fire Point’s highest-volume products and, by the company’s own account, its most operationally significant, accounting for around 60 percent of all Ukrainian deep-strike missions. Reported unit costs of roughly $55,000–75,000 have made the type a preferred tool against distributed targets such as Russian oil refineries. Ukrainian and Western commentary has linked FP-1 strikes to a reported 20 percent drop in Russian gasoline output over the course of 2025–2026.

FP-5 “Flamingo” – Ukraine’s Long-Range Cruise Missile

The Flamingo was first shown publicly in 2025 when President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed serial production, calling it Ukraine’s most successful missile. The missile itself is credited to Milanion Group, a UK-registered private design house, with Fire Point serving as the Ukrainian serial manufacturer.

Technically, the Flamingo is a large, turbofan-powered, ground-launched cruise missile weighing 6,000 kg at launch with a 1,150 kg warhead, boosted off a rail or towed launcher by a solid rocket and cruising to a claimed range of up to 3,000 km. In practice, reported strikes have flown shorter distances; the longest was roughly 1,800 km, in a June 2026 strike on a components plant in Cheboksary, reflecting the routing needed to avoid Russian air defenses rather than a shortfall in raw range. Guidance reportedly combines satellite and inertial navigation with French Safran components and the open-source ArduPilot flight-control stack, an unusual choice for a weapon of this class.

Production has been uneven. Fire Point targeted a ramp from 30 to as many as 210 units a month during 2025; by mid-2026, chief executive  Iryna Terekh described output of roughly 100 missiles a month across the company’s dispersed Ukrainian and Danish sites, after a slowdown tied to delays in disbursing a €90 billion EU loan package for Ukraine. Reported unit cost is around $600,000, a fraction of the roughly $3.5 million typically cited for a U.S. Tomahawk, though direct capability comparisons should be treated cautiously given the Flamingo’s more limited combat record and undisclosed accuracy figures.

FP-7 and FP-9 – Ukraine Reentry to Ballistic Missiles

The FP-7 is Fire Point’s first ballistic system, and the one drawing the most European attention. According to the company, it is derived from the airframe of a Soviet-era S-300-family interceptor, adapted into two configurations: a ground-attack tactical ballistic missile positioned as an ATACMS-class competitor, and an interceptor variant, designated FP-7.X, built for missile defense. Rather than the vertical, cold-launch method used by its Soviet ancestor, the FP-7 uses a wheeled mobile launcher and an inclined rail with a “hot launch” that ignites the solid motor directly at the rail, trading some performance for a simpler, cheaper launch mechanism. The motor case is filament-wound carbon fiber, produced in-house.

The FP-9 is a larger, longer-range tactical ballistic missile, designed to carry an 800 kg warhead against roughly 850 km of range. It is also road-mobile, with a reported air-launched derivative in development for delivery from a fixed-wing combat aircraft. Both systems are in flight testing rather than service; company data lists an accuracy of roughly 14 meters for the FP-7 and 20 meters for the FP-9, though neither figure has been independently confirmed.

Vertical Manufacturing: Motors, Scanners and a Feedback Loop

What distinguishes Fire Point from a typical drone startup is how much of its supply chain it has chosen to build itself. The company manufactures the rocket motor cases in-house, using filament-winding lines for composite manufacturing, capable of bodies 2.5–4 meters in diameter and up to 22 meters long. Fire Point has said it manufactures all of its own production tooling. For example, the company has also implemented its own non-destructive testing infrastructure using a large-format computed-tomography and radiography system (“6000-CT-STJ”) and a smaller companion unit (“320-CT-STJ”), both largely built in-house, inspecting for sub-millimeter defects.

The company describes its user-feedback process under the label JCEL – “Joint Combat-Engineering Ecosystem Loop” connecting frontline operators and doctrine writers directly to designers, manufacturers and operational planners, with a dedicated rapid-response function for engineering fixes. It is, in essence, a formalized version of the direct-to-front feedback cycle that Ukrainian industry more broadly credits for its wartime pace of iteration.

FREYJA: A  Sky Shield Pitch for Europe

FREYJA is Fire Point’s answer to a gap shared by Ukraine and Europe at large – an affordable, scalable, ground-based system to intercept ballistic and cruise missiles.  The pan-European project was launched officially in Paris last month by 10 governments. The roster of participants has grown quickly: in remarks on July 13, President Zelensky named Hensoldt, Thales, Diehl Defence, Saab, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Weibel, Leonardo, MBDA, Eurosam, Safran and Destinus as companies now engaged in the FREYJA effort alongside Fire Point. Fire Point has secured agreements to provide radar, guidance and other systems for the Freyja missile defense project, and is starting to integrate the various systems, its CEO has said. Hensoldt already announced it will produce, test and supply the TRML-4D — a mobile, AESA radar capable of tracking roughly 1,500 airborne targets simultaneously out to 250 km — and support its integration. Fire Point holds design authority and sits as prime contractor, owning the FP-7 interceptor and the system’s launch and control elements.

The economics are the pitch. Fire Point is targeting a cost of roughly $700,000 per FP-7.X interceptor, against the several million dollars typically cited for a Patriot PAC-3 MSE round, an order-of-magnitude difference that, if it holds up in production and in combat, would matter well beyond Ukraine. Manufacturing of FP-7.X interceptors is slated to begin in August 2026 at a target rate of three per day, with a first interception test planned for mid-2027. Fire Point has secured more than $1 billion in Ukrainian government contracts for 2026 overall, though that figure relates mainly to its drone and offensive-missile lines; no FREYJA-specific budget has been disclosed.

Ukraine’s Public-Private Industrial Base

Fire Point’s trajectory is easier to understand set against the broader transformation of Ukraine’s defense-industrial base since 2022, a shift from a Soviet-legacy, state-dominated sector to one where private companies now account for more than 60 percent of market activity, according to figures compiled by Ukrainian industry bodies.

The private sector’s rise happened in stages. A first, largely informal phase from 2014 to 2016 was built on volunteer networks, small teams and individual enthusiasts assembling drones and monitoring systems from commercial, off-the-shelf parts. A transitional phase from 2016 to 2021 saw the state begin building a legal framework for private capital in defense, culminating in a 2020 procurement law that let private firms bid as full market participants rather than subcontractors, and a 2021 law that began converting the state conglomerate Ukroboronprom into a corporate structure with independent oversight. Ukrainian officials describe 2022 itself as the point of no return: government defense-procurement funding grew roughly ninefold over 2021, and the first steps were taken toward a dedicated development fund for the industrial base. In the years since, the sector has consolidated further, from scattered volunteer initiatives into formal clusters, alliances and industry associations, a shift that mirrors Fire Point’s own path from a handful of friends to a company Ukraine now treats as a strategic asset.

By the numbers cited in Ukrainian industry briefings, the private defense sector now comprises more than 1,200 companies, including roughly 200 startups working across military and dual-use technology. Reported investment into the sector was on the order of €50 million in 2024–2025 — a relatively modest figure that says something about how capital-light much of this growth has been. Ukrainian officials have put the private sector’s export potential, within the limits of wartime security policy, at $3–5 billion.

Fire Point is, in miniature, the story of Ukraine’s wartime defense sector: fast, capital-efficient, deliberately decentralized, built around a tight loop between frontline users and engineers, and increasingly comfortable exporting not just weapons but expertise and equipment. For the European market, the near-term significance is less about whether the FP-7.X can match a Patriot round for round today and more about the pressure a credible, combat-tested interceptor at a sixth to an eighth of the price could put on incumbent primes’ pricing and production models, if it scales as promised.
