Delisting

The Xbox 360 Marketplace releases of Galaga and Galaga Legions DX were first delisted across Australia and Europe by May of 2021 based on a reader submission. Galaga Legions was then delisted in those same regions at some point after July 26th, 2021 but before May 27th, 2022.

The Xbox 360 backwards compatible releases of Galaga and Galaga Legions were next delisted on Xbox One across Australia and Europe by March 31st, 2022. Galaga Legions DX was also delisted in the same regions shortly thereafter by May 19th, 2022 according to price history on Deku Deals.

Galaga and Galaga Legions were also likely delisted on Xbox 360 in Japan and North America by the end of March 2022 but Archive.org captures do not show them as delisted until early April. Galaga Legions DX would then be made unavailable in Japan and North America on July 29th, 2024 when the Xbox 360 Marketplace shut down.

Galaga Legions DX was also likely delisted on PlayStation 3 across Australia and Europe alongside its Xbox 360 counterpart between July 2021 and May 2022. However, our earliest confirmation of the PS3 delisting wouldn’t come until March 11th, 2023 when its absence was pointed out by a reader of the site. We have so far found no earlier mentions of the game’s disappearance on PlayStation 3.

Previously and separate to these console delistings, the Windows Mobile release of Galaga Legions DX was delisted in 2018.

Cause

As is typical with Bandai NAMCO delistings, the cause is unclear and the company rarely gives advanced notice or explanation for its decisions. Like we have suggested in the past, these territorial delistings may be related to internal organizational changes within the sprawling international Bandai NAMCO entity. 

Availability

The Xbox 360 backwards compatible release of Galaga remains available on Xbox One in North America and Japan. Galaga is also available on several digital platforms in other releases including HAMSTER’s Arcade Archives series and Namco’s own Arcade Game Series: Galaga. The game is also included in Namco Museum Archives Vol 2. It was previously available on PlayStation 3 in the now-delisted Namco Museum Essentials and the PSone Classics release of Namco Museum Vol. 1.

Galaga and Galaga Legions are included in the retail Xbox 360 release of Namco Museum Virtual Arcade. However, there has been concern in recent years that some of the titles — namely the Xbox Live Arcade releases contained within — are no longer able to be acquired by using this disc. Both games are also included in the 2011 Nintendo 3DS release, Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions. Other home ports of Galaga remain available on physical media for older consoles and devices.
