Bot to populate this on lots of articles?

[edit]

Given the huge number of articles lacking alt text, perhaps there could be a bot developed to apply this tag to lots of article. Pharos (talk) 21:39, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I had the same idea. I've wanted to get into bot development for a while so this could be a good place to start! Rosaecetalkcontribs 14:02, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Maybe this bot could be implemented after we refine the template a bit, so it's clear which image on the page is the one needing alt text, per the section below. Longer-term, someone has suggested to me we could set up something like Wikipedia:Citation Hunt but for alt text. Pharos (talk) 18:35, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Making something similar to Citation Hunt is a cool idea! Anything that encourages editors to make articles more accessible gets a yes from me. Rosaecetalkcontribs 11:23, 14 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Had the same idea on first read, this feels like a really smart and easy place for such a system, may even be easier to introduce new editors to than Cite Hunt, since it lets one get familiar with having an account and editing while still being ‘self contained’. Version tied to particular images

[edit]

Perhaps there could be a version of this template developed that's tied to a particular image, rather than just saying there's some missing on the page as a whole. It could be more like {{citation needed}} which is usually tied to a specific sentence or statement. Pharos (talk) 21:43, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

In the meantime, maybe we could create a user script that highlights which images need alt text? Rosaecetalkcontribs 11:24, 14 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
