Hi Emma Thanks for your offer to help. I'm aged 87 and, frankly, somewhat overwhelmed by all this Wiki technical jargon which is new to me. That said, I have been complimented on my writing and content and have had many op-ed articles published on political and economic issues. My objective is to replace the existing Wiki entry for my wife, Margaret Daly, in which we played no part, and which does no justice to the story she has to tell, with a much longer piece. I have already started this and hope to finish a handwritten version over the next couple of days. My first question, therefore, is whether there is any length limit to these pieces? Let's start from there and I look forward to working with you. I should just mention that, sadly, Margaret suffers from mild dementia but we've worked as a team throughout the whole period we'll be talking about

@Kenmarden77: Hello there Ken, thanks for your message. I hope you are doing well.

I absolutely know what you mean about the Wikipedia technical jargon; it's very overwhelming when you first start and feels like quite a steep learning curve. We all have to start somewhere, and the important thing is to ask questions (as you're doing).

Length limits

To answer your first question, there isn't any strict length limit for Wikipedia articles. There are some guidelines about article size though, which suggest that at around 10,000 words it could be worth trimming an article or separating it into separate articles (see Wikipedia:Article size). For a biographical article, it would be unusual for it to reach that sort of length (unless we're talking about someone like a US president).

How to write about your wife

Because Margaret is your wife, Wikipedia considers you to have a conflict of interest when writing about her. That doesn't mean you can't contribute information (or that your contributions aren't welcome - they are!), but it does mean that the recommended approach is different. Rather than replacing the existing article yourself, you should instead propose edits on the article's "talk page" (more on that below), so that independent editors can review and add the material if it fits Wikipedia's guidelines.

The reason for this is that Wikipedia has to be neutral and fair, and it's very hard to write neutrally and fairly about your own spouse (even for people who are experienced writers, as you clearly are). Wikipedia has a guide on this kind of situation which might be helpful to read: Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide.

What is a talk page?

Every article has a talk page, and its purpose is to provide space for editors to discuss editing that page. You can access it by clicking the "Talk" tab at the top of the article. The talk page for your wife's article is here: Talk:Margaret Daly. This is the best place for you to propose edits to the article.

Other advice and next steps

There are some other points you should keep in mind while working on your handwritten draft (I've also included links to the relevant Wikipedia policies, if you're interested to learn more):

• Wikipedia articles are written in a neutral, encyclopaedic tone, rather than as personal or first-hand narratives. See Wikipedia:Neutral point of view.
• Everything on Wikipedia must be verifiable. Statements generally need to be backed by published sources that are independent of the subject (e.g. newspapers or news websites, magazines, books). See Wikipedia:Verifiability.
• Wikipedia does not permit original research. This means material for which no reliable source has ever been published, and includes things like your own analysis of events or drawing a conclusion that is not clearly stated in a source. See Wikipedia:No original research.

Dear Emma Thank you for all your helpful suggestions. As I anticipated, grappling with Wiki will be hugely formidable for someone like me with limited I/T skills. That said, I understand the the COI dimension and can give you some reassurances. Firstly I have read the Wiki profiles for three of Margaret's former colleagues, Barry Desmond (who will be mentioned in my piece),Terence (Terry) Wynne and the late Caroline Jackson, which I'll use as a model. Secondly, I have got independent corroboration available, mainly press articles or relevant pieces Margaret has had published. These include: 1988 Sunday Telegraph article with photographs of released Ethiopean princesses. 1982 Meat Traders Journal front page about slaughter house campaign. 1994 Various articles reporting leading West Indian cricketers endorsement of Margaret. Profile of Margaret published by Conservative Party. 1995 PR Weekly reporting on Margaret's international lobbying award. 1996 Copy of Eastern Star (Malaysia) reporting on Margaret's involvement with EC/ASEAN

     Cogen programme.

2012 Article by Margaret "We need to redress the imbalance between citizens and Big Money. 2013 " " " " "Time for Prime Minister to come clean on European Union".

I have scanning issues at the moment but rest assured, these pieces are on my desk. Other material can be made available. The handwritten draft is now completed. It runs to 1680 words. I will Start typing this tomorrow and will forward it to you when available. I'm a slow typist and we depart on a five week holiday at the end of this month and it's possible I may encounter some constraining issues beyond my control. However, I hope this will kick things off and give you something to work on. All thoughts and suggestions welcome.

@Kenmarden77: Hi there Ken, great to hear that you have looked at other Wikipedia pages of people in similar roles. It's also excellent that you're thinking about published sources. The kinds of articles you have listed (particularly newspaper coverage) are likely to be useful for supporting her Wikipedia article.

At this stage, it may be helpful if I give some further guidance on how that sort of material is typically used on Wikipedia, as it's slightly different from writing an article or profile elsewhere. The key points I'd make are:

• Wikipedia articles are built primarily from independent, secondary sources (for example, newspaper articles written about Margaret).
• Material written by Margaret herself, or published by organisations she was closely connected with, is usually treated more cautiously and used only in a limited way.
• Articles are written as neutral summaries of what reliable sources say, rather than as a full narrative or personal account.

A practical suggestion I would make at this point: as you type, add a note of which source(s) supports each section (for example, "this paragraph is supported by the 1988 Sunday Telegraph article"). That will make it much easier for me to help you convert it into Wikipedia format.

But, all up, it sounds like you're making great progress, and I'll be very happy to help further whenever suits. One good thing about Wikipedia is there are no set deadlines, so whenever you're ready, just let me know.

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for your message. :) I'm currently away from my laptop for a couple of days due to Easter and can help you out properly when I get back, but in the meantime, to get it ready for publication, you will want to make sure each statement or quotation in the article is supported by a citation with a reliable source. This is due to Wikipedia's policy of verifiability. For example, the "most perfect voice in America" quotation has a citation. But the quotation in the next paragraph from Claire Forbes Crane doesn't and you would need to provide one before publishing the article (as otherwise the content could be removed).

P.S. Don't worry too much about the exact formatting to use for citations; what matters most is that you provide enough information to identify the source.

@NikDrinkwater: it's looking much improved! And apologies, I keep getting sidetracked by other Wiki projects, and I've also run up against a bit of an issue with my newspapers.com subscription which has been preventing me from accessing more than a limited number of sources at a time; I'm hoping to get this resolved too. Appreciate your patience while I get to this! :)

One thing I have noted is that the 'personal life' section in general doesn't seem to have many sources, so adding those could be something to work on in the meantime (if possible). If you're asking about creating a new article, this is actually one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia, especially for new editors, and it can be quite frustrating. It's usually a good idea to start by editing existing articles so you can get a feel for how things work. You might find the tutorial and suggested edits on your homepage a helpful place to begin.

If you really do want to create an article, then Help:Your first article has further guidance. It's important to read this carefully before you start, as you might find that the article you want to create doesn't meet Wikipedia's requirements.

By the way, typing in all capital letters is discouraged on Wikipedia as it can come across as shouting. WP:CAPSLOCK has some information about this, including how to turn caps lock off if you're not sure.

Also, to manage your expectations, it can be quite difficult to get a Wikipedia article published as a new editor. The subject will need to meet Wikipedia's notability requirements, which generally requires significant coverage in multiple reliable and independent secondary sources. Unfortunately (and sorry this isn't the answer you're looking for), a Wikipedia page isn't the right thing for you at this time. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a place for people to create pages about themselves. Articles are generally written by independent editors when an artist has already received significant coverage in reliable independent sources such as newspapers, magazines, books, or other reputable publications. Wikipedia pages aren't always a good thing, either, especially early in your career (see this essay for more on this).

If you're interested in Wikipedia, we'd love to have your contributions to areas you're interested in (say arts or Austrian subjects; Category:Music of Austria might be a good place to look for articles you'd like to work on).

@Trevor Bumbarger: Hi there! I see you've already been assisted by other editors to some extent. I would really encourage you to read Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing, which I see another editor has already linked you to. Also, you are likely to get people contacting you and offering you their services to create a Wikipedia article for pay; please be wary of such contacts as they are almost always scammers (and can never actually guarantee you a Wikipedia article anyway).

As a more general comment, to meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines, a subject should have significant coverage in multiple reliable, independent secondary sources. Coverage in multiple news articles, magazines, etc, can certainly count towards that, but it doesn't always (for example, if the coverage is an interview with you, it's likely to be a primary source, not a secondary source). @Pebbles118: hi there! Welcome to Wikipedia. Many articles could benefit from spelling and grammar improvements, so it's fabulous to have you here. I think the best starting point would be the Guild of Copy Editors wikiproject; their page has a bunch of resources and suggestions on how to get started. You can also ask questions there, although of course I remain happy to help at any time. And Wikipedia:Basic copyediting is another good starting point for guidance.

How to ask for clarification

article in question: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_administrative_divisions_of_Vietnam_by_Human_Development_Index so I noticed that the page for HDI of Vietnam's subdivisions by provinces and municipalities: Have no basis (afaik from official sources there is only data for 2024 prel, which is before the merger. There is no official post merger subdivisional HDI yet) And a wrong source. The source they cited for the HDI: https://www.gso.gov.vn/en/px-web/?pxid=E1438&theme=Health%2C%20Culture%2C%20Sport%20and%20Living%20standard Is actually the data for inequality index The most recent edit is someone changing HCMC's HDI to 0.829, and there is still no source or clarification on where exactly this came from How do I request for clarification on the source and how do I get people's attention on this? I'd want a real official source for subnational HDI if possible. Right now I'm suspecting there's none up to date. I don't want to replace the data table with the official data because that would require putting in outdated data, and could be seen as vandalism. @XD4hlia: Hi there, good to hear from you again and thanks for your question. The best place to raise this issue would be on the article's talk page, linked here: Talk:List of administrative divisions of Vietnam by Human Development Index.

You can explain the issue as you set out here, and you can also notify the editor who added or changed recent data by pinging them in the article talk page discussion using the following code: {{ping|User name}}.

If it turns out there isn't a reliable source given for the information in the article, then you can revert to the most recent data that's supported by a reliable source - even if it's older, that would be better than having nothing there (and wouldn't be vandalism, especially if you'd explained the situation on the talk page and sought views from other editors).

As a mentor, my role isn't really to raise content disputes or questions on behalf of mentees. However, I'm happy to answer any further questions about how you raise this kind of issue on a talk page, or review a draft post for you, if you like and if that would be helpful.

P.S. I wouldn't worry about whether you're "reputable enough" to raise issues or change anything. If you provide sources, comply with Wikipedia's content policies, and are wanting to improve the encyclopedia, that's what matters and your edits are welcome here. :) Edit requests and talk page messages unfortunately do take a bit of time to get answered sometimes, but that's mostly just because we're all volunteers and there may only be a few people interested in a particular area. @XD4hlia: ah, in that case, I suggest be bold and change it yourself! Explain the reasoning briefly in your editing summary. If your edit gets reverted by someone else, you can then take it to the article talk page.

(To be honest, my initial advice was probably too cautious! If you see something that's wrong on Wikipedia and you can fix it, you're always encouraged to do that. @RealCVK: Hi there! Welcome to Wikipedia, and I'm very sorry for the delay in coming back to you. That's a great question. I can see you've already successfully made a couple of edits and have got the hang of adding words to an article. It's important to note that any information you add must be supported by citations to reliable and published sources (see WP:CITE for more guidance on this) - for example, textbooks, magazine or newspaper articles, journal articles.

In terms of adding images, things are a little more complicated. You can add images to Wikipedia if they're available under a free licence, or if you personally own the copyright (and are willing to release the image under a free licence). In some limited circumstances images may be uploaded as "fair use", and in that instance there are special guidelines to follow. There's a lot more information here, Wikipedia:Uploading images... but to make life easier, if you want to tell me about the images and where they come from, I can help you figure out if you're able to add them to Wikipedia or not. ChocMilk03: Why, thank you! Yes, I just blundered right ahead, didn't I? Except for the images. But what the heck kinda' text/page markup code is *this*? I mean, I've got some background in SGML and HTML and Compugraphic typesetting, but don't recognize this stuff at all.

The edits I've ventured credit myself as an original source. I was there, personaly, directly involved and participating.

And I know probably more about that stuff than most others. Not good enough? And I happen to have some primo images, of various kinds. One (or more) could be of the original publications being referred to, in one case, and even some pages showing who/what is being talked about. Or, in the case of the Portland Saturday Market, images I created. Some unique or rarely seen stuff, really.

But I'm all ears and sitting at your feet. What would be the best, most beneficial way for me to proceed?

@Irexb Uni: Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for your question (it's a good one!). Wikipedia has a policy of verifiability (see Wikipedia:Verifiability), which means that readers should be able to understand where information on Wikipedia has come from (and check it themselves if necessary).

Generally, every time I add any information to an article, I make sure that I add an in-line citation to support that information. The only time I wouldn't do that is if the information I'm adding is already covered by an existing citation (e.g. I'm just expanding a sentence that is already cited) or if I'm only fixing what's already there (e.g. fixing typos or rewriting something for clarity).

Citations to reliable sources are particularly important when you're adding facts such as dates, statistics or quotations, adding information that might be controversial or challenged by others, or adding information about living people.
