Thank you today for CSS General Earl Van Dorn, introduced as a "type of American Civil War ship" ... The cottonclads were a Confederate invention out of desparation - while the Union was churning out City-class ironclads in late 1861 and early 1862, the almost pre-industrial Confederacy had difficulty keeping up. Instead, the Confederates decided to harken back to the ancient tactic of naval rams - they modified civilian river steamers for ramming, and protected the most important machinery with compressed cotton, which the blockaded South had out the wazoo. The idea worked once, at the Battle of Plum Point Bend but failed spectacularly at the First Battle of Memphis where Van Dorn was the only one of eight cottonclads to escape destruction or capture. Taken up the Yazoo River, General Earl Van Dorn was burned under orders of a panicked Confederate officer later in the year. Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:24, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

- @Bearian: - I expect that this one would be salvageable. See this (page 1 and page2), or this. Those are both fairly local sources, but discuss this more thoroughly than you would expect for a non-municipal neighborhood. - Changes to user permissions made from Meta are now included in the local user permissions log (T6055).
- The autoconfirmed user group will soon be modified such that the four-day account age requirement begins when an account makes its first edit (T418484).
Arbitration
- The arbitration case SchroCat has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 15 April.
- Per a recent motion, appeals of blocks from the conflict-of-interest VRT queue are, by default, appealed on-wiki through the normal unblock process. However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
- Per a recent motion, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
- The arbitration case Maghreb has been closed.
Miscellaneous
- The May 2026 administrator elections are scheduled to run from April 29 to May 19. The call for candidates ends May 5.
- The 2026 Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election is scheduled to run from April 25 to June 1. Candidacy submissions close on May 10.
- A new noticeboard for non-urgent, batch page protection requests has been created, primarily for the enforcement of contentious topic restrictions.
Old Sources at USS Missouri (1841)
[edit]Hey, was considering doing a source review for this one, but am a bit worried looking at the sourcing. I see you did an SR at MILHIST here, but of course those standards are quite different. I mean how does the nominator justify nine references to a 1912 source, that is in fact written by the institution which created the ship? Many of these refs cover huge swaths of text too. I am just not familiar with naval proceedings and such so wondering your thoughts. Aza24 (talk) 17:18, 6 May 2026 (UTC)

The source seemed to be a little on the side of Lost Causery and I'm not sure if I'm carrying forward archaic language or if there are any key pieces I am missing. - @Jengod: - What I have for this in my sources is from Ed Bearss, The Campaign for Vicksburg: Grant Strikes a Fatal Blow (Morningside, 1991) p. 523 - Most of the boys in blue were shocked to see the wholesale destruction inflicted on the Bowie, Gordon, and John Routh plantations by Tuttle's men, who had passed this way several days before. The "several days before" is relative to an unclear date in early May, and Tuttle commanded a division in Sherman's corps. The general gist of the plantation burning as described in your draft is plausible and consistent with what happened all along the route of Grant's march down the Louisiana shoreline. I would substitute the reference to the Siege of Vicksburg in your draft to something about the Vicksburg campaign instead, as the march past Lake St. Joseph occurred weeks before the siege itself (which was only one stage of the campaign) started. [edit]Hello HogFarm - thanks for reverting the incorrect Wikilink in Battle of Marion. This appears to be a new problem in Wikipedia. It seems like newcomers are going around looking for things to Wikilink. In the Battle of Droop Mountain, I had some text that read "...and a battalion of six companies from West Virginia, Illinois, and Ohio." It was changed to "...and a battalion of six companies from West Virginia, Illinois, and Ohio." (Although I did learn that there is a city named "Virginia, Illinois".) Also had some text that read "...were detached in the Greenbrier County area of West Virginia." It was changed to "...were detached in the Greenbrier County area of West Virginia." -- meaning it was Wikilinked to the resort hotel! They appear to have been Wikilinked without any thought, almost like AI. It's fixed now. Anyway, thanks again for fixing things. TwoScars (talk) 19:19, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
