Order of band members

As suggsted by UndergroundMan3000 HorrorLover555.

What I find rather strange is how some bands have band members listed by seniority, and other bands have it listed by the instrument (like in the timeline, usually vocals > guitar > bass > keys other instruments > drums etc).

Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth have it listed by seniority in the infobox and the members section, but Metallica, DragonForce, Machine Head (band) to name a few, have it by seniority in the infobox and by instruments in the band members section.

From what I can tell, ordering by seniority appears to be the more common approach overall, but this is not applied consistently. Attempts to standardize individual pages sometimes meet resistance, which is understandable because there isn't a side-wide guideline...

Personally, I don't mind either way, I even do agree that it makes more sense that band members are ordered by seniority, but it should be one way or the other for all bands, with that said, a good argument I've heard for the members section to be ordered by the instrument is because it matches the way timelines for bands go so that orientating yourself is easier.

Relatedly, should timelines also follow the same ordering principle, or is it preferable for them to remain organized by instrument for clarity? Or is it just too much work? TerminatorZXY (talk) 15:35, 4 April 2026 (UTC)

Regarding timeline order, there was a spicy exchange between Lapadite and MFTP Dan on Talk:Evanescence#Timeline recently. One made a case for band members being shown in strict timeline order regardless of instrument. The other was for grouping by instrument, then timeline. In my highly non-scientific sampling, it looks like by instrument is much more common. I think it's helpful for showing the progression of member changes by role in a band. Sometimes band members switch from one instrument to another, temporarily or permanently. Consider the Beatles, where Paul McCartney was originally a rhythm guitarist, only moving to bass after Stuart Sutcliffe left. He was even considered for the position of drummer, and later on, he played drums on some recordings when Ringo wasn't available, most notably "The Ballad of John and Yoko". That is a good point. You also mentioned ordering alphabetically - yes that's is indeed how it's usually done when I say "ordering by seniority", original members alphabetically, and then by seniority. Here's another thing I want to point out Rammstein, Radiohead -- they all have original members so timeline isn't really needed. But it's not ordered alphabetically but by instruments. Rammstein is, Radiohead is somewhat randomly ordered. In regards to members changing instruments, that's a good point too, but that's why I think by seniority and then alphabetically is the better idea, because a band member may switch instruments but they're stil going to be in the same order. I'm strongly for firstly maintaining the usual order of members in the timeline (by instrument then chronologically), but also listing the band members in this order. Listing members chronologically is only enforced in the infobox but doesn't apply to the members section at this stage, so to me, a sensible solution would be if the section has a timeline, the members should be listed in 'timeline order' to match; if it doesn't – and what constitutes enough changes to warrant a timeline is a whole other discussion that will no doubt be rehashed at some point – the members can be listed chronologically. Redrose64, on your point about instrument changes, the first role that they play in the band would be where they're positioned on the timeline – for example, if a member initially plays bass but then moves to guitar, they would still be listed among the bassists; that said, the timeline (and indeed the whole members section) should just be restricted to main roles only and not include occasional roles/filling in on instruments for a recording, etc. 4TheWynne (talk • contribs) 18:05, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

So this discussion has been stale for a minute but I'd like to bring this back up, if I could. Widgetkid has spoken for most of my argument; if you want to see more specifically how I believe we should approach this, see the discussion they linked on the talk page of Evanescence. I personally was lobbying for grouping by predominantly instrument, as Widgetkid presented with examples, while Lapadite wants strictly time which I find disorganized for various reasons contained in that discussion. Redrose64 brought up a good point, and that actually applies to the very band I was in this exchange about. Tim McCord changed from bass guitar to guitar in 2022 after playing bass for 16 years; if I had it my way, a new line for incoming bassist Emma Anzai would be created directly below Tim, while Tim's line in the plot would simply change to a green one as it stands now. Were Tim to hypothetically leave or change to another role and a new guitarist be welcomed to the band, a new green line would start for the new band member directly below what was the descending line of green, just further down the x-axis than usual. That's how I believed it pretty much was always done but apparently there's debate. Should we make RfC for this? This is extra tricky when it comes to band who are retired, all members the end up in the "former members" section, which means we might end up with cases where the most well known/important members get stuck listed between several far less important persons. ★Trekker (talk) 17:19, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

I went to the Rock music project and reviewed all the band articles that are FA with Top & High importance, along with those that are GA with Top and High importance. Of those that had timelines, every single one is organized by instrument:

While there wasn't a full consensus of all the details, all example timelines included members grouped by instrument.

You linked two 10+ years old discussions that are unrelated to this specific matter and are about color schemes and whether touring musicians should be included with band members; the second link even has an RfC that was determined to lack consensus. There is no WP guideline supporting an arbitrary and subjective instrument "order" preference for a timeline image, or WP:OTHERCONTENT, therefore a community consensus is needed. Also, articles must present content in a structurally neutral way. A written timeline list is in chronological order (the order in which members joined - a neutral, objective presentation), which defines a timeline. A supplementary visual timeline (the image) should reflect the same chronological order of the text timeline for the same reason and for consistency. Lapadite (talk) 08:20, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

I am sure that some people, perhaps including Lapadite based on arguments they've reiterated several times, might think I am forsaking my duty as a Wikipedian by saying this, but I would like to affirm that I think that making template instructions based on NPOV is not necessarily for the better of our readers and when the content is infographic ordering and not readable content, it actually damages the accessibility of the chart by letting every role run wild. I could only imagine how many editors would be up in arms if (for sake of example, it doesn't apply practically cause the band's literally her "and friends") Amy Lee left Evanescence and they got a new vocalist. Lapadite, if there's one thing that I think you have right, it's that the timeline and list should match for consistency, but the order of members/instruments in the timeline is pretty well-established, and as I've argued above, ordering the list by instrument as well would be the easiest solution. 4TheWynne (talk • contribs) 14:43, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

To comment on your example, yes, in a current members timeline a new vocalist would be placed at the bottom, chronologically. You're operating on a subjective view that a vocalist is more important than all other members and therefore should be at the top of every list, even despite the other members being in chronological order. Where is the rule that vocals is inherently more important than other instruments that a singer must invariably be at the top even when the singer position in a band is that of a hired gun or a glorified session musician? Look at the band Nightwish#Band_members, it is led/owned by the lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas. That band has hired multiple singers over the years. Singers are not the driver of the band, why would a new hired singer be placed at the top? That is confusing for readers as it implies that singer is an early member of the band (go ahead and try to move up any of their past singers above the founder Tuomas). Instead, when a new singer is hired they go in the next chronological position in the list. That's the beauty of chronological order, its simplicity and neutrality; presenting events in linear time can only be objective, not open to interpretation. Subjective as it may be, I believe it is in the vast majority and the project's best interest. Sometimes reasonable precedents need to be made, Lapadite, and that's what I believe is needed here and I'm trying to do. Also, what? Where the bar appears on the y-axis doesn't imply, whatsoever, to anyone but you, that a member is an early member of the band. That's what the x-axis is for. The way the chart is listed on List of Nightwish band members is ideal. (Actually, I'm not keen on the thin bars, everything else is. But that's another discussion...) If something was "open to interpretation" with the method of the majority, I might understand your concern, but I don't follow at all. mftp dan ^oops 18:36, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

I don't know what you're responding to with the y, x-axis and bars, I was talking about the order in which members are listed in a members list. The Nightwish members list contradicts your instrument perspective, as it is in chronological order with singers listed in the order in which they joined, not at the top of the list. I see what you're saying now. We were talking about different things. Our wires got crossed; this issue is complicated. Now I see why you want chronological order better, there is some consistency reasoning to it with you bringing forth Nightwish as an example. I like consistency too, but I still don't like the idea of remapping the timeline chart to accommodate the band member list; it should be the other way around. If either of these things is changed, it should be the member list practice that's changed. It's far easier to look at an image than a written list of different instruments, though both should be included. mftp dan ^oops 19:38, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

I just want to add that likewise, the order of timelines should be changed to match if it does lead to that. That's a lot of work because there's thousands of bands, but it would lead to less questions in the future such as "why is the timeline like that but the normal order of band members chronological". As for "what if all members are original or more are", the order should be alphabetical in my opinion, but you'd be met with a lot of resistance if you tried that on for example Rammstein's page, if Till isn't on top. I would appreciate some additional eyes on the above article. For context, this article went from being created on one source and nominated for deletion in February, to having 600,000 views in the past 30 days. Between certain editors removing the "Canadian" adjective, internet sleuths attempting to out the band members who are trying to remain anonymous (a BLP issue that concerns me the most), and general TA and new user enthusiasm, I'm having to revert more than I'm generally comfortable doing. I don't think it's bad enough to request protection, but at the same time I'd rather not be at three reverts when someone names the members again. Any help is appreciated, thanks. My hesitation is that while the BLP issue is the most serious potential problem, it's only happened a couple of times, which I'm not sure is enough to justify protection (though I'm admittedly inexperienced with RPP). More common is unsourced and sometimes ill-advised edits from new users, which I probably need to be less concerned about taking immediate action on. I've added a hidden comment to the 'Members' section, which I'm not sure even shows up in Visual Editor or mobile editing, but maybe it will help provide a deterrent. Band timelines guidance

After consulting on the RFC talk page, I boldly added a section to article guidance regarding band timelines.

It covers the following aspects of band timelines:

1. Member grouping
2. Instrument order
3. Instrument color
4. Release colors

These patterns are used on all current FA & GA top & important band articles with a timeline.

I intentionally didn't add many other aspects of band timelines. While some usage patterns do exist, they can be contentious and include corner cases. I intentionally did not attempt to answer:

• Should backing vocals be included & what color should they be?
• What should the timeline size be (500 vs. 800 vs. 1000 pixels)?
• What should the size (height) of timeline bars be?
• Where and how should the timeline's legend appear?
• What should the bar increment (in pixels) be?
• What should the major year scale be?
• How should instruments in non-pop/rock band timelines be ordered?
• How should member sections beyond the timeline be organized?

I have (perhaps just as boldly) added backing vocals to the section, as should they be included/what colour doesn't seem to be in question, moreso where should it be in the order (which varies across the aforementioned articles), but as a secondary instrument, it should really fall after the main ones as highlighted at the RfC; I'm reasonably confident that few to none would object if this was changed at the aforementioned articles, but one thing that could be worth discussing that also wasn't covered above is the inclusion of session/touring musicians in timelines, as that seems to be a more contentious one. 4TheWynne (talk • contribs) 07:10, 26 May 2026 (UTC)

Hello WikiProject Musicians! I have just finished a complete English translation of the biography for French film score composer and orchestrator Xavier Berthelot, currently at Draft:Xavier Berthelot.

The draft is translated from the French article (fr:Xavier Berthelot) and includes his work orchestrating major recent films like the 2024 The Count of Monte Cristo. I have cleaned up the translation formatting, structured the filmography layout, and linked his IMDb/AlloCiné references.

Would someone from this WikiProject mind taking a look at the above? The person who posted the move request also asked about it on my user talk page, but I've only was able to give them some very basic information. I don't really know anything about the subject of the article per se; they may be Wikipedia notable per WP:NEXIST. Tribute band

Hello. I was wondering if tribute bands like this one are really notable. I saw that there was a deletion discussion, but one of the four people with comments seemed to only ever make their edit supporting it. Also, the band article was created by an editor who had never edited before. And only seemed to ever edit one other article. Could this be fishy and not really notable? And I guess I have similar questions about the member of the band that has an article. Why do modern musician articles so rarely feature a personal life section?

I've noticed this over time that vanishingly few seem to feature such a section - yes, I noticed via Taylor Swift.
