Rape Aggression Defense System (R.A.D. for Women)

The Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System is a program offered to female students and employees at Virginia Tech. 

The four-part course begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, and progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training. Participants learn self-defense tactics and techniques.

The free course is taught by Virginia Tech Police Department officers and is offered several times a year.

Applicants who may have questions on which course is best for them are encouraged to reach out to Corporal John Tarter at tarterj@vt.edu.

Upcoming Sessions

Registration for RAD for Women Fall 2026 is now OPEN!

During Fall 2026, we will offer two sessions. Location TBD:

  • Session 1: 6-9pm. Wednesdays, September 2, 9, 16, and 23
  • Session 2: 6-9pm. Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20, 27
